A website is one of the most powerful tools you can have for your business. From launching a new company to enriching an existing one, a good website will help you attract more customers, maintain business relations, and develop your brand.

Building a website can be a complicated process, but for most small business owners, less is more. Just like the last term paper you wrote, your website should focus on the five W’s of your company.

  • Who are you
  • What do you do
  • When are you open
  • Where is your service
  • Why do they need your business

With easy to use templates and a low monthly cost, you can have a Wix website up and running in a few hours.

Each box of text is easy to edit and you can add pages with just the click of a button. Wix websites are pre-built for mobile users, allowing you to reach more people without having to know any of the technical details needed to build a phone friendly website.

With high quality galleries and image driven design, Squarespace is popular for photographers. Templates are pre-built with a dozen or so pages that can be used to outline your business. When you begin customizing your website, you can delete any extra pages or add more if you need them.

WordPress is one of the most popular website platforms available and is used by businesses and bloggers alike (including Daily Mom). Running over 25% of the websites on the Internet, there are plenty of reasons why so many use WordPress to build their sites.

WordPress is an open source platform, meaning any designer can create templates for use in their system. Creating a website in WordPress can take a bit of time, and requires attaching a couple of elements together.

1. Buy a Domain.
GoDaddy is one of the most well known options.
2. Purchase Hosting.
Hosting is where your website’s files are stored. HostGator or BlueHost are two hosting solutions that will automatically install WordPress for you.
3. Install a theme.
The theme is the template for your website and can be customized as much as you’d like. Start out with a free theme or purchase one from a marketplace like Themeforest.

If you’d like a more basic website, you can use to start and build a website using a limited set of features and templates. The biggest difference between WordPress and is the ability to install tools that allow you to customize your website as much as you’d like.

Cost: WordPress itself costs nothing. A domain is $12 – $25 per year and hosting is $5 – $50 per month.

Websites from Weebly are a good cross between the full customization available from WordPress to the set templates available from Wix and Squarespace.

With a little patience, you can build your own website in just a few hours or more. Pick the platform you feel most comfortable in, and test out the templates and settings until you find a solution that fits you best.

Before pushing your website live, share it with a few family members and friends for critique. Ask if they can find some of the most important information you want your customers to know. This may include pricing, hours of operation, or your contact information. If your website reviewers have trouble finding this information, so will your customers. Accept feedback and revise until you have a website you are happy to share with the world!
