The Correlation Between Music and Learning

Music elicits many different emotions within our minds. It stirs happy memories and helps to cure us when we are in a funk. Music holds so much power. Every day the brain is overloaded with sensory information that one has to pick and choose what is relevant to that moment. Music helps to prime the brain to listen and decipher patterns better acclimating one’s brain on the decision making process. A young child’s brain is especially susceptible to the benefits music has to offer thus making the correlation between music and learning monumental.

Music and Academics

The more a child listens or practices music the faster the brain is calculating how to use and interpret all the sounds, rhythms, and cues that are being thrown at them. The way that music is translated in the brain happens fast, therefore, the more one hears music the quicker one gets at translating everyday cues.

Listening and practicing music:

  • Improves recall and retention of verbal information
  • Increases average SAT scores
  • Improves Mathematical Skills

Music and Memory

As one develops musical skills, a great deal of recall is involved. This recall helps the brain to remember patterns which improve one’s memory skills for other subjects. Music helps to prep the brain’s response to repeated stimuli, making the connection easier for later on. It helps the body and mind work together by learning and understanding rhythms and patterns.

Music and Emotions

Music allows children to express themselves in ways that words alone may fall short. Young infants learn that music is fun and silly through various movements, they even listen for cues as when to clap their hands or tap their toes. Children often sing without inhibition, and fostering this skill helps to improve their self-confidence. Older children may use music to help them zone out and focus on what they are studying. They may also use it as an escape from everyday life. Music can take one to a different level of emotional experience.
