Bump Up Your Calcium

A mother’s work is never done. From running to the grocery store, work, park play dates, cleaning, you name it, we do it all. Unfortunately, our health isn’t always at the forefront of our minds. Common Deficiencies During Pregnancy: 

  • Iron: Over 17% of pregnant women are diagnosed with iron deficiency in the U.S., thus increasing the need for supplementation.  
  • Vitamin D: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends 600 IU per day of Vitamin D for all women (including pregnant women). Increasing evidence may be even higher for pregnant women and babies; vitamin D is hard to get through foods so supplementation is often needed.
  • Calcium: Calcium absorption increases as well as bone mobilization. Women that don’t get enough calcium through their diets should consider calcium supplementation.  
  • Iodine: Iodine deficiency is becoming more common and is necessary for brain development. With the increased use of non-ionized salts, women are more at risk for deficiency. The IOM recommends an intake of 150-220 micrograms each day for pregnant women.  
  • Calories: Creating and carrying a life inside of you takes a lot out of you. Your body needs extra calories to help balance all the changes within your own body. It is important to increase your calorie intake during pregnancy. Specifically, add an additional 300 calories per day during the second trimester and 500 during the third.  
  • Sleep: You may notice that you feel tired during pregnancy; this is because sleep helps to maintain our body. Many important activities take place while we are asleep. Sleep helps to reset our body to better prepare the baby.  

Importance of Calcium 

Approximately, 68% of women are calcium deficient. We all know that calcium is vital to our health; we need it to build healthy bones, teeth, nerves and muscles.

While you don’t need extra calcium when you are pregnant, you do need to make sure you get enough calcium. The problem is that if you aren’t getting enough calcium in your diet, your body will naturally leach the nutrients from you, so that the baby can be as healthy as possible. Mom instincts are naturally ingrained in us; even our bodies put our baby first. If we do not get enough calcium early in life, we are putting ourselves at risk for osteoporosis later in life.  

Pregnant women need 1000 mg of calcium to meet daily requirements.

Ways to Increase Your Calcium Intake

Pregnant women require 1000 mg of calcium per day, however the body can only absorb 500 mg of calcium at a time. Most prenatal vitamins contain only 20-30% of the calcium your body needs.   • 8 ounces of milk has 293 mg of calcium
