Good Protein Sources For Your Little Eater

We all know that in order to have a balanced diet, we need to have a proper mixture of nutrient rich foods.

Protein, in particular, is suggested to be introduced to babies typically around 8 months old. The normal human body needs 22 amino acids, however, it only makes 13 of them. The other 9 amino acids must come from foods high in “essential acids.”Good Protein Sources For Your Little Eater 1 Daily Mom, Magazine For Families{Photo Courtesy: Lilac Saloon & The Memoirs of Megan}

Your child is getting all the amino acids it needs from your breast milk, or from formula, so protein shouldn’t be given in high excess. Protein deficiency is extremely rare outside of third world countries, as people typically follow a balanced diet.

As with any and all nutrition advice, please consult with your doctor if you have any specific questions, or concerns.

The following list is a good reference list for good sources of protein. Please know that this list is not age specific, and will not be appropriate for some babies within their first year of life. Certain proteins can trigger allergies (such as the protein found in cow’s milk), however, each protein is different and shouldn’t all be lumped into the same category.
  • Meat (lamb is easily digestible, and is a great starter meat.)
  • Poultry
  • Quinoa
  • Soy (items such as strained tofu)
  • Eggs
  • Dairy such as: full fat yogurt, cottage cheese, milk and cheese
  • Legumes
  • Fish
  • Amaranth
  • Lentils
  • Chickpeas (Maybe look for a yummy homemade hummus recipe?)

Try blending some of these essential foods from the list with some whole grain items for a completely balanced, and filling meal that both you and your baby, will enjoy.
