DIY All Natural Odor Eliminating Discs

Odor eliminating discs can be used in a number of places — diaper pails, garbage cans, stinky shoes, gym lockers, your car trunk, the list goes on and on! But, buying these discs is an unnecessary expense. In fact, you can avoid store bought odor eliminators that are filled with chemicals by making your own using just a few natural ingredients.

This DIY is a fraction of the cost, takes no time to put together, and you probably already have the ingredients. Read on to see just how easy it is to make your own all natural odor eliminating discs!

The first step in odor elimination is finding the source. Once you know where the smell is coming from, you can place a disc to absorb the smell and freshen the air.

To make the discs, all you need is an essential oil of your choice and 1 household ingredient — baking soda! While baking soda is known for soaking up offensive smells, adding in the essential oils takes the odor eliminating a step further. You can customize your scent by using just one oil at a time or by mixing two or more of your oils together to create your favorite scent combination. The possibilities are really endless with this recipe!

What you’ll need:

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup water
  • Essential oil(s) of choice – About 10 drops total
  • Muffin tin and liners
  • Small bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Mixing spoon
Yields: 12 discs
Time to complete: 24 hours

Measure your baking soda and pour it into a small bowl. Add about 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Lemon, lavender, orange or peppermint are great options, but you can use whatever you want. Add a small amount of water at a time and mix it into the baking soda until it forms a paste — it will take about 1 cup of water to get the right consistency. If it seems too watery, just add more baking soda to thicken up your mixture. If it seems too dry and crumbly, add in more water.

This recipe can also be doubled if you want to save time and stock up with a big batch all at once.

Now it’s time to fill the liners in your muffin tin.

Tip: You can use a small ice cream scooper to help you get equal portions in a snap. The measurements in this recipe will make enough to fill your muffin liners about halfway. You can also use a mini muffin tray to make smaller portion sizes.

Let your discs dry out for 24 hours. You can leave them outside to speed up the process, weather permitting. When they’re all dried and hardened, peel off the liners and place them where you need to get rid of any bad smells.

Each disc lasts about 3 weeks, and extras can be stored in an airtight plastic bag in the freezer for a few months. When your discs have expired, feel free to crumble them up and toss them in your washer with a load of laundry to use them to their full potential.

Other odor eliminators include:
  • Simmering citrus peels, cinnamon or vanilla in water on the stove
  • Vinegar in a wide bowl near the source of your odor
  • Coffee sprinkled on dryer sheets, left to sit overnight near the source of your odor
  • Activated charcoal in a cheesecloth near the source of your odor

Now that you know how to make your own odor eliminators, you can say goodbye to chemical-filled discs or expensive air fresheners!
