Biggest Beauty Trends of 2017

With all the beauty trends that come and go, sometimes it’s hard to keep up with what’s new and now. We’ve got the skinny on this year’s hottest beauty trends to look out for in 2017. With everything from glitter lips to holographic nail polish, it’s going to be a fun year for beauty! Along with the more daring trends, there’s something for even the minimal makeup wearers to look forward to. Read on to have a look at some beauty trends you’ll be seeing this coming year.

This year, we’re seeing two different sides to the makeup spectrum — fun, bold colors as well as natural, effortless looking makeup. Here’s a compilation of what this year will bring in the world of beauty.

Holographic Effects

We’re seeing holographic effects all over the place — on the runways at shows like Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang, in lip colors, cheek highlighters, face palettes, and even in nail polishes.

Holographic Lip Gloss

Didn’t think you could wear holographic effects on your lips? Think again! Sigma came out with holographic lip glosses called Lip Switch Lip Gloss that sold out the same day they launched for sale. The five piece set comes with prismatic glosses that you can layer over your favorite lip color.

  • Double Whammy: Green and lavender duo-chrome
  • Flip-Flop: Fiery orange holographic finish
  • Other Worldly: Frosty green gloss
  • Pink Lotus: Bold, prismatic pink
  • Transcend: Cool, purple opal tones

People are creating all sorts of creative and artistic looks with these lip colors, and we’re predicting they’re going to be ultra popular at this year’s festivals like Coachella. You can wear it on its own, but for the most holographic look, layer it over a dark liquid lipstick. It’s a fun way to add some shine to your lips with a unique twist.

Holographic Highlighter

Milk Beauty’s Holographic Stick Highlighter uses meteorite powder and twilight pearls for a prismatic, iridescence to amp up any look. It can be used on the cheeks as well as on the lips or eyes to add a unique and artistic feel to any makeup look. This stick highlighter gives a lavender sheen so it can go with many skin tones as an eyeshadow. As a cheek highlighter, it probably shows up best on darker toned skin, and as a lip color, you can wear it on its own or layered over a darker lip color. This cream stick product is infused with mango butter, peach nectar, and avocado oil for deep moisturizing and nourishment to the skin.

Holographic Powders

Kat Von D introduced her Alchemist Holographic Palette over the holiday in December 2016. The palette was seven years in the making and has been consistently sold out. The first of its kind, the Alchemist Holographic Palette utilizes 360° refractive pearls that reflect the light from any angle. And what’s more, these refractive pearls are dipped in a prismatic coating, giving an even more intense holographic effect.

There are four shades in the palette:

  • “Emerald” green
  • “Saphyre” blue
  • “Amethyst” ultra-violet
  • “Opal” pink

These shades can customize any look when applied over eyeshadow, lipsticks, or even on its own as a highlighter.

Holographic Nails

If you’re on the more conservative side with makeup, you don’t have to miss out on the fun of holographic effects entirely. Try any of the ILNP Cosmetics holographic nail polishes for a statement nail — like Cameo: a pink, purple, copper, gold, and green ultra chrome polish all in one. This high quality polish packs a serious punch in pigment with fully opaque coverage to make your nails look like an artistic oil spill. You’ll have a hard time deciding which polish to choose; the colors are all so beautiful!

Glitter

Glitter is also having a serious moment and we can’t say we hate it. We’re seeing it in lipsticks, eyeshadows, and even as eyeliner on the lower lash line in more artistic Instagram and YouTube makeup looks.

Glitter Lips

For an ultra glittery and girly pout, as seen in Versace’s runway show, try Pat McGrath Lab’s Metalmorphosis Lip Kits. That is, if you can get your hands on one! All three of these popular glitter lip kits are sold out, unless you can afford to shell out up to $600 on Amazon. For a more affordable option, get some makeup grade glitter like the Glitters from Make Up For Ever. Mix it into your lip gloss, and your mouth will be sparkling for a night out. You can also use it with a glitter adhesive to layer over your eyeshadow, elevating and glamming up any makeup look.

Glitter eyeshadow

Stila’s Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow is a beautiful, long-wearing liquid glitter eye shadow without the fall out you can sometimes get from glittery eyeshadows. The water-infused texture makes it lightweight with an easy, smooth application so even beginners can use it with confidence. Formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, these liquid eyeshadows are offered in eight different glittery shades.

  • Diamond Dust – Sheer Silver and Multicolor
  • Gold Goddess – Sheer Antique Gold and Silver
  • Kitten Karma – Champagne, Silver, and Copper
  • Rose Gold Retro – Rose Gold and Silver
  • Smoldering Satin – Deep Tan and Silver
  • Smoky Storm – Light Pewter and Silver
  • Violet Vixen – Violet and Blue
  • Molten Midnight – Black, Silver, and Gold

Glitter Nails

Once again, for a more wearable look you can opt for a glitter polish. You can use loose glitters over wet polish, followed by a clear top coat, or simply use a glitter polish. And did you know there’s a “right” way to apply glitter polish if you want a densely glittered nail? Take it from Kelli Marissa and check out this YouTube video to see how it’s really done!

Gloss

Glossy Eyelids

Glossy eyelids are often found in editorial shoots and we’ve also seen them on the runway for Jenny Packham, Spring 2017. You may have also seen them on Kylie Jenner and been tempted to replicate the look — it’s actually easier than you think. You can use products like Kevyn Aucoin’s The Exotique Diamond Eye Gloss layered over regular shadow that will give an instant patent leather, high shine effect. A more affordable option is taking a lip gloss and applying it to your lids over your eyeshadow or on its own. Keep these things in mind and you’ll have a successful look — choose a thicker gloss so it stays in place, and try to avoid the crease area to keep it from feeling too sticky and creasing.

Glossy Lips

If glossy lids aren’t your cup of tea, keep the focus on your lips with a high-shine gloss like Jane Iredale’s PureGloss Lip Gloss — a product that’s full of nourishing ingredients and isn’t too sticky. Pair the lips with a fresh face or a full face of makeup depending on your mood or the occasion. Glossy lips are not only feminine, but they give the effect that your lips are nice and full as well.

Minimal Makeup

If you’re not into bold or statement makeup, this year is just as much about effortless beauty and minimal makeup.

Skin is In

Let your skin shine by giving it some TLC using sheet masks that target your problem areas. There are masks for anything you can think of: hydrating, firming, brightening, de-puffing, lifting, reviving, pore cleansing, tightening, and illuminating — you name it, there’s probably a sheet mask for it. Give yourself a spa treatment at home using Dermal Korea Collagen Essence Full Face Masks and keep your skin looking its best. Apply the sheet masks and let them do their magic for 20 minutes before removing to reveal glowing skin.

Full Brows

Full brows are not new to the scene, but they’re here to stay for 2017. With the full brow trend, we predict microblading to become more popular this year — a semi permanent tattoo of hair-like strokes for full, natural looking eyebrows. Microblading is done to look like real hairs for natural but structured, defined brows. Anyone who has over-plucked brows or gaps in their eyebrows can have this procedure done. Since it’s not traditional tattooing which implants the pigment deep into the skin, microblading will typically last from 1-3 years depending on skin type and age.

Nude Lips

Nude lips look great on everyone and unlike dark, bold lips, the application process doesn’t need to be as precise. Try lining your lips with Jane Iredale’s Nude Lip Pencil, then going in with one of the NYX Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipsticks for a matte finish. If you can’t bother with a liquid lipstick or you just aren’t into the formula, try a gloss or even a lip balm to keep your lips looking hydrated and soft.

So out of these popular trends, which ones will you try this year? From holographic effects to minimal makeup and everything in between we’re sure you’ll find something perfect for your style.
