Raise your hand if you love The Walking Dead! We are big fans here at Daily Mom. We’ve been watching for years. For many of us, our love for The Walking Dead began before our children were even born. What makes this show so excellent isn’t the gross zombies and special effects, it is the character development. We learn lessons right along with the characters. As they change, we change and we take away new things to think about after every episode. They might be surviving a zombie apocalypse but we are surviving parenthood and some days, that feels like the same thing. Spoiler Alert! If you aren’t caught up through Season 6, please don’t read this. With Season 7 premiering, we thought we would bring you 10 parenting lessons from The Walking Dead.

Shortly after my first child was born, an online friend of mine lost her baby. She was 7 months old. There are no words to describe a loss like that. No words of comfort. No words of peace. There is just a void that is felt in your world – a gut wrenching emptiness that grasps the very core of your being and doesn’t ever let go. And those were just my feelings – for the loss of a child of a woman I barely knew. My heart ached for her. I cried for her. I weeped for her sweet baby. And then I weeped for my sweet baby as thoughts of “what ifs” played through my head over and over again in the days that followed.
It’s pretty cliche, but as every mother knows, our children grow up way too fast! Before we know it, they have surpassed crawling to running, cooing to non-stop talking (no, really…what’s silence?), preschool to elementary, and suddenly it’s off to college. Eighteen years goes by in a flash. Thanks to the new digital age, we are able to capture every minute of it on a device that fits into our back pocket (and oh, we do!), but while pictures and videos are precious time pieces to have, they can’t always capture the heart, the endearing and overwhelming amount of love from the mother behind the camera. Pen and paper journal writing offers an in-depth look into one’s soul, a true connection to another being. While it may not be as up-to-date and modern as Instagram, it is time capsule, pass-me down through the generations, and cherish me forever kind of material, and in our book, that’s something worth starting!

They say time is fleeting and the baby years pass by so quickly. You have probably already experienced this as you look at your little one in amazement at how much they’ve grown. Where has the time gone?! When we are tired, busy and also trying to be great mothers, it is easy to multitask and get distracted.
Maybe you catch up on your favorite show while baby plays on the floor, make a phone call while pushing the stroller, and answer emails while nursing baby to sleep. It’s not bad to do these things but sometimes it’s nice (and important!) to take a time out from distractions and to truly be in the moment like your baby is. Here are a few very simple and enjoyable ways to be in the moment with your little bundle.
The bonus? These are great bonding activities that will bring you closer together and remind you just how much you love your child.
