Recently my family took a trip to Southern California. While we currently live in the Detroit area of Michigan, I was born and raised in Southern California, and half of my family still lives there. With my two young children, we make it a point to travel as a family to visit the area at least once every couple years. This time though, it was different. We didn’t really feel like we were traveling with babies any more, since my youngest is three years old, and my oldest is five. We didn’t have to schedule anything around naps, or breastfeeding breaks, or diaper changes, and that (in and of itself) was amazing. We did, however, get the opportunity to test drive a Mazda CX-9 for the week, as well as visit Disneyland with the children, and I’m here to tell you all about that experience today.

Momming ain’t easy, and being tired is fo’ real. Moms spend so much of their days taking care of someone else, hardly thinking of themselves. In the early days of a child’s life many parents, especially breastfeeding mothers, choose to co-sleep with their infants. When done safely, co-sleeping can be extremely beneficial in ensuring the entire family gets some sleep. As babies grow though, so can the inconveniences. The lack of personal space and alone time can become a burden and, by the time your child is a year old, many parents are ready to reclaim their bed as their own. When you’re a mom, time away from your daily routine is unusual. What happens when you run into a rare day of unexpected down time? Maybe all of your kids were invited to play dates at friends’ houses on the same day. The night my husband and I were supposed to take the hospital’s breastfeeding class, I wasn’t feeling well. I was exhausted, uncomfortable and felt like I was coming down with a cold. So, we skipped it.
24 hours later — I was holding my first-born, baby boy in my arms.
In hindsight, I probably should’ve taken the breastfeeding class. From the start, I had trouble breastfeeding Julian. We had to use a nipple shield, and Julian constantly fell asleep at the breast. I was told to pump and supplement, so we started on bottles almost immediately. Bottles were much easier than breastfeeding, which literally had me sitting at the couch for hours on end. (Looking back, I really should’ve embraced those long hours full of E! and Twilight marathons!)
What once came second nature as a child, is now one of the hardest things to do as an adult. No longer in need of a friend at the lunch table, we now need friends capable of much bigger duties: holding our child’s hand when we can’t, lending an ear while weighing a difficult decision, or providing a shoulder during a tragic event. Making friends amidst life’s crazy adventures has many adults trying to figure out exactly how to bypass the initial awkwardness to ultimately find that close circle of friends, but as we will soon explain, you should try to embrace it fully and throw yourself out there.
