Children are naturally curious. They find wild delight in tiny ants crossing the sidewalk, they take pleasure in pulling out all the contents in your kitchen cabinets, and they love sticking their hands into gooey mud and rubbing it all over themselves and the dog. Children want to learn and explore the world around them – and it is our job to foster this creativity by encouraging them to think critically about the how’s and why’s of the world. It is your job to enlighten them in the world of science.

My Darling Children,
I do not consider myself a political scholar, or even possessing extensive political knowledge. I cannot relate to all the woes of the world – because I am only one person. I only know what it is like to be me – a white woman in trying times. Times that will test us, bring us to our knees. I cannot speak for the minorities or the masses. I can only speak for myself – and as your mother – I must speak up for your future.

Halloween is one of the best holidays of the year. What’s not to love: fun costumes, perfect weather, friends, family, late bedtimes, and candy. All that candy can be overwhelming. You want to enjoy the holiday, have fun and be carefree, but you are also dreading the aftermath – the “My child is up entirely too late, and now they want to eat all this candy, and I’ve got to tell them no… right?”
We recently spoke with Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph.D, a psychology professor, a brain and cognitive scientist, and an expert in the psychology of eating. According to Susan, telling them no isn’t always the right answer. At least, not on Halloween night.
One in four. That’s how many women will experience a miscarriage in their reproductive lifetime. There are so many women out there that share this difficult, painful, and scary experience yet the discussion around it is minimal. Luckily, many women go on to have successful pregnancies after their losses, bringing a rainbow baby into their lives. There are others that have difficulty conceiving or keeping a pregnancy who are left grappling for answers. No matter what, for those who have experienced miscarriage or infant loss, the pain can still be found even years later.
According to the CDC, the obesity rate has quadrupled in the past 30 years. And, with the obesity epidemic sweeping the nation (especially within children), it is more important than ever to teach kids about health and exercise. Children are extremely impressionable and often imitate what parents do, thus making it immensely important to instill healthy perceptions of fitness early in life.
Our society tends to focus too much on what a person looks like, tainting the image of a healthy body. Instead of harping on having the perfect body or looking a certain way; teach your child(ren) the importance of why exercise coupled with a healthy diet is so crucial to longevity, overall health, and happiness.
A mother’s work is never done. From running to the grocery store, work, park play dates, cleaning, you name it, we do it all. Unfortunately, our health isn’t always at the forefront of our minds. And while most of us do a pretty good job of taking prenatal vitamins to help us stay healthy during pregnancy, we could still be missing out on vital vitamins and minerals that aren’t provided in prenatal vitamins; namely, calcium.
You walk into school orientation – slightly excited, slightly overwhelmed. You salivate at the thought that kids going back to school means a little more time to yourself. Fist pump. In the early days of a child’s life many parents, especially breastfeeding mothers, choose to co-sleep with their infants.
