3 Reasons to Improve Your Posture + Giveaway
This post brought to you by ALEX Wearable Posture Tracker and Coach. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Daily Mom.
If you’re anything like us, you often heard the following phrases from your mother: “Stand up straight!” and “Don’t slouch!” Our moms claimed that it was to make us look more confident and less like a slob. Years later and you’re now repeating those same words to your children. However, the problem has only escalated.
With the world at our fingertips via smartphones and computers, slouching has reached epidemic proportions as we spend hours at a time looking down at our devices. And while it’s important to “stand up straight” for the sake of looking a little more put together, we now know that proper posture can do wonders for our mental and physical health.
With that in mind, today we’ll discuss 3 critical reasons why you should take better care of your back through proper posture and ways to improve it.
1. Gain Confidence
Standing up straight can imply to others a sense of self-assurance; and we know that when you look the part, you have a stronger chance of acting the part. In this case, when we stand with our shoulders up, we exude confidence.
According to a study at the Ohio State University, researchers found that self-confidence levels are directly related to posture. In particular, those who slouch are less likely to believe positive comments about themselves, whereas those who stand up straight are more inclined to believe positive comments about themselves.
Whether you’re the parent or the child, confidence is power. Confidence allows us to take on the world and do great things, so if proper posture can lead to greater confidence in ourselves, then it’s worth the attention.
2. Reduce Chronic Back Pain
If you’ve ever found yourself leaning over your computer for hours on end, you know the pain associated with poor posture. That back pain is one of the most commonly reported symptoms of bad posture. Add days, weeks or years of hard work (office or manual labor) to the situation, and you can quickly find yourself with chronic back pain. That pain is significant enough on its own, but we’ve found that the physical damage can penetrate much deeper.
3. Increase Energy
We didn’t realize how important proper posture was until one of our kids began vocal lessons. One of her first assignments was to improve her posture. Sure, it would make her look more elegant when it was time to perform, but what we didn’t know was that by slouching, she was reducing her lung capacity, making it difficult for her to fully utilize her diaphragm, which ultimately affects singing.
Slouching crowds your internal organs and makes it more difficult for them to function properly, which can negatively impact digestion, lung capacity and more. By addressing your posture, you can easily create more lung capacity, resulting in more oxygen to the brain, which increases focus, alertness and energy.
Correcting Your Posture
Improving posture is really quite simple to adjust, but it’s easy to slip back into poor posture when your mind is focused elsewhere. Here are 4 simple tips to help you correct your posture:
1. Raise your device
One of the best methods for avoiding “text neck” is to limit the amount of time you’re using your device. Since that isn’t always an option, try lifting your device higher to lessen the angle at which your neck is tilted. Use your eyes to look down at your device, instead of your neck.
2. Use a rolled up towel
When sitting, your ears should be centered over your shoulders, feet flat on the floor, and a slight curve in your lumbar spine. Using a small rolled up towel in the curve of your back helps support proper posture while sitting and keeps you from subconsciously slouching.
3. Get up and move
Many of us spend hours a day sitting in front of a computer or at a desk. Several hours in the same position can fatigue in your back muscles, resulting in slumping. Stand up and stretch, walk around, and change positions. Give your muscles a break from one position and rejuvenate them with a few quick stretches.
