How to Stay Fit on Vacay

When you’re planning to get away from it all, staying fit might not always be at the top of your priority list. Adding workouts into your vacation routine doesn’t have to be a buzzkill, and can even be a fun way to experience a new city.

If exercising isn’t currently part of your daily schedule, vacation is the perfect time to try something new on for size. A good workout can help you sleep better and provide an opportunity (if you need one) to really splurge on meals and dessert while you are away from the house.

We’ve put together a few creative ways you can keep up with your workouts, or introduce something new, while you are on the road.

Pack the right gear

If you don’t pack clothing to exercise in, you aren’t going to exercise. Even if you think you might not have time, packing one set of workout gear can help put you in the right mindset to workout. Don’t forget the proper shoes, socks, and sports bra!

Workout Packing List

  • Good sneakers
  • Socks
  • Sports bra
  • Shorts or leggings
  • T-shirt or exercise shirt
  • Hair tie
  • Headband

Use the hotel gym

If you are staying in a hotel, chances are they have a complimentary gym for guests. Hotel gyms are typically limited in what equipment is available, but most have the basic treadmill, exercise bike, and a few weights.

If you plan to use the hotel gym, expect it to be busy early in the morning as that is when business travelers are most likely getting their daily workouts in. Try to hit the gym mid day after your morning activities in town to optimize your time in the facility and have time afterwards for a relaxing shower or bath.

Hit the city on foot

Heading out on the town for a run can be a fun way to experience the area you are visiting in a new light. Talk to the hotel staff (if you are at a hotel) or ask your host if the area is safe to run in if you plan to go alone. Safety should always be your top priority.

If you are unfamiliar with the area, plot out your route ahead of time. This will ensure that you do not get lost or turned around. The app Map My Run often provides running routes near you that you can check out.

If you are lucky enough to be in one of the 14 locations with a City Running Tour, check out what pre-set runs are available for you to join in on. These guided tours are hosted by locals and often feature some of the hidden gems in the city. Runs are categorized by length, terrain, and what sights they feature.

Take in a Class

One of the wonderful things about group fitness classes is that typically they are the same routine no matter which gym you choose to visit. From yoga and pilates to barre and surf fitness, you can sign up for drop in classes at most local gyms. Drop in prices are typically $15-$25 for a one hour class.

If you are looking for a specific class type, Pure Barre for example, just head to their corporate website and look for licensed facilities near where you are vacationing.

If you’d like to try something new, Class Pass is a great way to look up what is closest to your hotel or vacation rental. If you are a Class Pass subscriber, you can visit gyms in their network anywhere in the country without any additional costs!

Trick yourself – and your traveling companions – into working out

Want to go on a hike? What about a mountain bike ride? Is it winter? You could go skiing. All of these outdoor activities come with the added bonus of being a great workout.

Experiencing the nature in a new place is a great way to see the landscape like a local. Ask the barista at the coffee shop in your hotel what their favorite outdoor activities are and where you can check those out in person. You might just discover stand up paddle boarding is your new passion!

Hopefully these tricks inspire you to find a new passion for fitness on your next adventure! What other ways do you like to stay active when you travel?
