The History of Alaska & Kenai Fjords National Park

Travel Alaska has a ton of interesting facts about the great state of Alaska. For example, Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. There are 100,000 glaciers throughout the state. There are eight national parks – such as Kenai Fjords National Park. Alaska has two time zones: Alaskan and Hawaiian-Aleutian. Most of the state – including Kenai Fjords National Park – is on Alaskan time which is a four-hour difference from the east coast.

World Strides reminds us all that Alaska is the largest state and 470 New Jerseys could fit inside of Alaska. One final interesting fact is, according to Alaska.gov, there are 70 active volcanos in Alaska.

If the state’s geography doesn’t interest you, maybe the ecosystem will. The Kenai Fjords National Park Tour is a six-hour tour of the Alaskan Southcentral coast. During the tour, you’ll see all kinds of wildlife including puffins, seals, and even whales. But that’s not all you’ll see. You’ll also get a glimpse of an Alaskan rainforest.

The Kenai Fjords National Park Tour leaves from Seward, Alaska which is approximately 2 hours south of Anchorage. The captains of these boats have years of experience navigating these routes and will guide tourists through these incredible sites, providing fun tidbits and also answering questions along the way. The tour also includes a lunch consisting of homemade sandwich wraps and fresh-baked cookies.

In addition to wildlife, visitors will see the Aialik Cape, and either the Aialik Glacier or Holgate Glacier during the tour. After your visit to the glacier, Alaskan Margheritas, complete with glacier ice fished out of the water right before your very eyes will be available for your return trip to port.

The Aialik Glacier is the largest glacier in Aialik Bay, according to Alaska.org. While traveling to or from the glacier, visitors may see whales, porpoises, seals, and maybe even a bear or two along the icy beach. The Holgate Glacier, according to Alaska.org is both a tidewater glacier as well as a mountain glacier.

What’s a tidewater glacier? The National Snow and Ice Data Center define a tidewater glacier as a glacier with a valley that flows all the way to the ocean. Regardless of which glacier the Kenai Fjords National Park Tour takes you past, either will likely be calving (separating into smaller icebergs) during the summer months, giving tourists breathtaking views and Instagram-worthy moments.

Now that you’ve decided on an Alaskan adventure, there’s only one other hurdle you’ll have to overcome. Packing. It’s never an easy feat, especially if you’re traveling with children. Fortunately, there are many experts out there who have compiled lists of suggestions to help you take everything with you that you’ll need. According to the National Park Service, spring and summer temperatures, when you would likely be cruising, can range anywhere from the 40s to the low 70s. It’s best to pack clothing such as long underwear, that can be layered for colder days.

Rainy weather should also be anticipated, making it a good idea to pack clothing with a waterproof outer shell and waterproof shoes or boots. It’s also recommended that you pack binoculars to help you see Alaskan wildlife up close. Because mosquitoes are the mother-of-all-evil, Alaska.org recommends you pack a repellent that has a DEET concentration of 30-40%.

Alaska Collections – your tour host with the most, recommends visitors also pack a sleeping mask. Why? We’re so glad you asked. Alaska.org provides a sunset chart for the area and you might be surprised to learn that the sun doesn’t set during the summer months until sometime after 11:00 p.m on average.

If you’re packing a DSLR to help capture amazing photos and memories, make sure you bring an extra memory card. If you’re not familiar with taking pictures while on a boat tour, articles like the one written by Intrepid Travel are helpful with information on how to take the best photos as well as protecting your camera while on the sea. Intrepid Travel recommends photographers use a high shutter speed to prevent camera shake caused by the boat rocking.

It’s also recommended that photographers don’t try to change out their lenses while on the water. One rough wave could be all it takes to send a lens flying or soak other lenses in your camera bag. If you’re going to bring more than one lens with you, Intrepid Travel suggests packing your spare equipment inside of plastic bags to help keep them dry. And one final suggestion, if you have a neck strap for your camera, make sure you wear it at all times while on the boat.

Sea lions, whales, and bears, oh my! This summer, don’t have any adventure. Have an Alaskan Adventure when you take the Kenai Fjords National Park Tour with Alaska Collections! The tour might only last six hours but the seasoned staff employed with Alaska Collections will give you memories that will last a lifetime. So, what are you waiting for? Get your cruise on today!
