Whether you are an experienced pet owner or you are flirting with the idea of owning your first pet, a pet lizard is a low maintenance and welcome addition to any home. Before bringing your bundle of joy (or scales) home, make sure to educate yourself on what a pet lizard requires for a safe and homey environment. The following includes a comprehensive list of what to purchase for your pet lizard. Crickets and all.
Terrariums
All pet lizards need somewhere to call home. This home can be as simple as a 20-gallon fish tank or can include an upgrade to a terrarium with window ventilation. Regardless of your initial purchase, note that some lizards grow so much in their initial year that a 40-gallon tank may be necessary as an upgrade on your pet lizard’s first birthday.

Heat Lamps
Being cold blooded, lizards require heat to maintain body temperature. The heat allows lizards to move quickly enough to catch their food, digest it, and contributes toward a healthy immune system. The good news: all you need to create this heat for your pet lizard is a tiny heat lamp.

UVA Lights
In addition to heat, reptiles also require sunlight – or something to replicate ultraviolet light. As a pet owner, purchasing a lamp fitting a UVA lightbulb will provide your pet lizard the ultraviolet light it needs to live a healthy life.

Thermometers
One easy an inexpensive way to monitor that your pet lizard’s heat lamp is working correctly is with a thermometer. Most easily adhere to the side of the tank/terrarium. It is up to you whether to purchase one or two: one to place by the heat source and one away from the lamp to ensure your lizard has temperature variance within its home.

Liner/Mat
Pet lizards are low maintenance in part due to the ease of cleaning their homes. For around $5, you can purchase a liner or mat to cover the bottom of your tank/terrarium. This liner is usually non digestible, removable, and easy to clean with tap water.

Water and Food Bowls
Your pet lizard requires a bowl for both its food and its water. Water can be cleaned and replenished every few days as long as your baby lizard doesn’t decide to use its water bowl as a commode (in which case you just need to rinse with water and replace). The food bowl is ideal for mealworms or for leafy greens which are both part of your lizard’s diet.
Decor
Your pet lizard’s home can be as simple as a tank with a rock (to reach the heat source) or it can compete with MTV’s Cribs complete with vines, sticks, and a lizard lounger/hammock. For looks, clingers are available making the tank look like a scene from a Western film. You be you, boo.

Food
While live crickets are best for young lizards (which are available at pet stores), there are food options available to purchase online which enhance your pet lizard’s diet. It is beneficial to introduce your lizard to vegetables at a young age. Additionally, even when purchasing crickets from a pet store, make sure to ask for your crickets to be dusted in calcium (or buy your own). This supplements the vitamin D your lizard is missing by not living under the sun.
