Our daughter came unexpectedly at 35 weeks. My pregnancy wasn’t the easiest of the 4- my blood pressure was an issue after 25 weeks causing me to have to do ante-natal appointments once a week after 30 weeks with week 35 being the most eventful after being told my blood pressure was dangerously high and they needed to risk a premature baby to ensure I was safe. But our little Brooklynn was born perfectly healthy, happy and strong – a strength we didn’t know she would need more than anything else.

Part of feeling prepared for your little one to arrive is to efficiently pack your hospital bags with all the possible necessities you can think of. It’s easy to get carried away but it’s also hard to make sure you have all your bases covered. If this is your first baby, you likely don’t know the details of how this is all really going to work out and what will help you get through it. This list of hospital bag necessities is of the must-have variety. Items such as make-up or hair dryer are not here. You can certainly have a baby without those things and still be comfortable. Feel free to pack your luxury comfort items but it’s quite possible you won’t even touch them!

This list is broken down into separate bags: Labor Bag, Recovery Bag, Partner’s Bag and Baby’s Bag. If you know that you will be laboring and recovering in the same room, you can easily pack your labor and recovery items into one bag.

Life After C-Section: What to Expect After a C-Section

Moving Around After a Cesarean

The first and most important thing you need to be aware of is that any movement is going to feel impossible after a c-section. In order to make things more bearable bring your own pillows. The hospital pillows are pretty flat and you are going to need to prop yourself up into comfortable positions. Take help from any friends and family to get you up in those first few days and take advantage of the different chairs in the room to get into different positions. Don’t be shy asking the nurses for help venturing from your bed either, especially the first trip to the bathroom. The sooner you get moving, the faster you will start healing so try to take your first short walk within 24 hrs after surgery.
