Love Your Locks: 3 Homemade Conditioners

Your family has made the decision to live a Green Lifestyle. You buy local organic food, you wear organic clothing, you even make your own cleaning supplies! But why stop there? Making your own conditioner is one of the easiest ways to tie your Green Lifestyle into your beauty routine. In this post, we’ll share three different conditioners, their benefits and how you can make them.

Love Your Lock 3 Homemade Conditioners

Oily Hair– Coconut Conditioner

Coconut oil conditioner is specifically designed for oily hair- it removes any excess oils while leaving your hair extremely soft, light and smelling amazing!

Coconut Oil Conditioner Edit

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 C water
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • whisk
  • bowl

Place the egg yolk into a bowl and whisk until it is frothy. Add the coconut oil and continue to whisk a bit more. Pour the water into the bowl and stir until the mixture becomes smooth.

Apply the mix to your scalp and hair, massaging for 1 minute and let it set for 2-5 minutes.

Rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water.

Style as usual.

Make sure you use cool water when rinsing this conditioner. Using warm or hot water may start to cook the egg, making it difficult to remove.

Dry Hair– Avocado Conditioner

Avocados are extremely rich in good fats, proteins, and vitamins and has a number of other amazing benefits. This conditioner will penetrate the cuticle layer of your hair and deposit the nutrients deep into your hair.

Avocado Conditioner Edit

What You’ll Need:

Place the peeled and pitted avocado and water into a bowl. Use the fork to mash the avocado and mix it with the water. Add the olive oil and heavy cream and mix well.

Apply the mix to your hair, concentrating on the driest areas of your hair. Using a large comb, make sure the hair is completely saturated with the mixture and massage into scalp.

Cover with a shower cap and leave sit for 20-30 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Shampoo and style as usual.

Mixing Conditioner Edit

Using a shower cap does a few things: it prevents the conditioner from drying out due to exposure to the air, it holds in your natural heat radiating from your scalp, opening the cuticle layer of your hair and allowing the conditioner to penetrate deeply into your hair strands, and it keeps the conditioner from making a mess on your clothes.

Normal Hair– Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner

Apple cider vinegar will help balance the pH level of your hair leaving it soft and shiny. It will detangle the hair as well as seal the cuticle which will result in a smooth, frizz-free finish.

Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner Edit

What You’ll Need:

Combine all the ingredients in the applicator bottle and shake well.

Apply the solution to your hair and massage it in.

Rinse thoroughly.

Style as usual.

Remember the episode of The Brady Bunch where Marcia Brady brushes her hair 100 times to keep it healthy and shiny? The truth to that lies within the brush strokes on the scalp; gently brushing and massaging the scalp will stimulate the blood flow, nourishing the follicles and keeping them healthy, encouraging healthy hair growth.

Keep in mind that these conditioners are not meant to take the place of your styling products. You will still need to use products to achieve your desired finished look.
