Easy Homemade Autumn Potpourri

The undeniable smell of autumn is in the air. The cool crisp breeze, the cider and apples are all a warm reminder that fall is here. With all of these amazing scents surrounding us, why not bring those aromas indoors by making homemade potpourri that includes some of these ingredients?

Today we share with you two amazing homemade fall potpourri mixes.

Both of these recipes are easy to make and only include a few ingredients. You will see that each recipe includes similar drying processes with the only variances being specific to ingredients. You can make this recipe your own and add in different items to obtain your desired look or scent. We recommend ways in each recipe to do just that!

When making these potpourri recipes, the fruit drying process is nearly identical with the only differences being that of the fruit being dried. You can also dry whole pieces of fruit or just the peel as described in two separate drying processes.

Fruit Drying Process

The actual process of drying fruit is relatively simple. Using citrus fruits such as lemons, limes and oranges are perfect add-ins to your potpourri because they retain their color and shape once they’ve dried.

Directions:

  1. Cut desired citrus fruits into thin slices.
  2. Place on wire rack.
  3. Heat at 200 degrees for approximately 2 hours; make sure to flip every 1/2 hour.
  4. Leave oven door open so moisture can escape.
  5. If fruit is not dried enough, leave in for an additional 30 minutes.

Fruit Peel Drying Process

You can also dry fruit peels to add into your potpourri, which adds both depth and texture to the mix. If you choose to add in fruit peels, make sure to use a sharp knife or wide peeler when obtaining the peel from the fruit. When peeling the rings, try to peel them in long strands because as they dry they will turn and twist into cool designs. Heat the rings in the oven for approximately 2 hours, again turning them over every 1/2 hour.

Add-ins

Snatch some bags of freeze-dried fruit, which is available in many stores, to add into your potpourri blend. Freeze-dried fruit has no moisture in it, so it’s an ideal and easy add-in that requires no additional effort on your part. In particular, try using freeze-dried strawberries as they provide a vibrant pop of color in your potpourri mix.

You can also add spices to compliment the fruit in your mix. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Cinnamon sticks
  2. Whole cloves and star anise
  3. Herbs (try thyme and rosemary)
  4. Ground cinnamon and nutmeg
