There are two primary components to our DIY lip balm: Beeswax & Coconut Oil. You can choose to just use these two ingredients and end up with a great lip balm on its own (just mix 1 part beeswax with 2 parts coconut oil). Or, you can get creative and add in other essential oils (like Vitamin E), honey, and even a flavoring like peppermint.

Here’s what we used for our easy DIY lip balm:

  • 1 tsp. grated beeswax (packed down) or beeswax pellets
  • 2 tsp. coconut oil
  • 4-5 drops of Vitamin E oil
  • 1/2 tsp. honey
  • Optional: for colored lip balm, add in remnants of a favorite blush or lipstick – as little or as much as you desire!

This recipe will make enough to fill a couple of small lip gloss jars or tubes. Feel free to double the recipe or stick to the ratio of 1 part beeswax to 2 parts oil to make as much as your heart desires!

Process

  1. The easiest and fastest way to make this lip balm is to mix all of your ingredients together and heat in 10 second increments in the microwave until the beeswax is melted into the oil. If you are opposed to microwave use, you can heat your ingredients slowly on the stove using a double boiler. Either way, make sure you stir your mixture periodically throughout the heating process.
  2. Once the ingredients are heated and mixed together, immediately (& carefully) pour into your desired storage vessel (see below for container ideas).
  3. Let your lip balm cool and harden for a few hours before using or giving as a gift.

Other Ideas to Consider:

  • Add in some shimmer powder for a sparkly balm.
  • Create your own labels and give your homemade lip balms to friends and family for gifts.
  • Use cocoa powder for a tint of color and flavor.
  • Don’t be afraid to play! Experiment with different oils and flavors to make your own signature lip balm. If you mess up, try again!

Where To Find Supplies

Ingredients:

In terms of buying beeswax, you can find a bar of it for a few dollars at your local health food store or we recommend these Organic Beeswax Bars or these Beeswax Pastilles/Pellets that you don’t have to grate! Coconut oil is available at your local grocery store. Vitamin E oil and other essential oils can also be found at health food stores or online. We used Home Health Natural Vitamin E.

Containers:

Recycling old lip balm tubes or containers is a great option – just clean out thoroughly before use. Altoid tins also work great! If you are interested in purchasing empty containers that are made for DIY lip balm, we love these Lip Balm Tubes with Caps and these Lip Balm Jars. Very affordable and perfect for adding your own label and giving as gifts!

Extras:

Are you wondering how you can easily transfer warm lip balm solution into a tiny tube? The answer is little funnels! (Or, you can also just pour very carefully and hope you don’t make too much of a mess!) We love this Stainless Steel Funnel Set that’s pictured below. Another option would be a glass measuring cup with a pour spout (like this Pyrex Measuring Cup) – perfect for heating in the microwave and transferring your solution directly into your container of choice.

  1. I make my own lip balm too – and it’s super easy & fun. Yours looks like a nice simple recipe. I love the colors you ended up with. Just one word of caution, for the optional color you mention, a little lipstick would be fine, but a little blush may or may not be. Reason being that not all colorants that are approved for use on the face are approved for use on the lips. Since you are basically eating lip balm / lip stick, all colors & ingredients used should be “lip safe.”

  2. Hi:) i have made this balm a few times now, using the stove top method, and some of them don’t ever quite get solid:( (the top will harden but when you go to use it, its all gooey, maybe the honey didn’t mix well) By some I mean two out of ten. I was wondering if you have any solutions for this? Its not a big deal, just kind of a bummer haha. Thanks

  3. Hey Erin! So glad that you are experimenting with our recipe, but that is a bummer! I have never had this happen to me, so unfortunately I’m not sure what exactly is going on. You could try eliminating the honey and seeing if that helps or increasing the amount of beeswax you use just slightly. The beeswax is the hardening agent that keeps it all together. Also, make sure that all of your ingredients are really well melted and incorporated before pouring – I’m sure you are already doing this, though. Wish I had a direct answer for you!

  4. @ Erin
I had the same thing happen to me. You can either stir honey really well (it doesn’t mix really well in hot wax) or you can add honey as your last step after allowing lip balm to slightly thicken (just before it hardens)

  5. Hey there! I really want to make some natural lip products and came across your blog. I was wondering if you knew if you just lessened the amount of beeswax if it would make a more liquidy version to use as a gloss? To put in containers with wands? Thanks.

  6. Hi Bethany! The beeswax is definitely the ingredient that holds everything together. Without it, you would get a gloss with the coconut oil, however it would not retain any solidity in warm temps since coconut oil melts above 78 degrees. I honestly have not tried making this recipe with less beeswax. You would need to do some experimenting on that. I’m sure there are tons of recipes available for DIY lip glosses out there on the world wide web, as well. Best of luck!

  7. I have an old clear lip balm tube that I want to use- it looks like the one in your picture. Do I simply pour the liquid mixture into the lip balm tube or how would I do it?

  8. Hi! Yes, you can easily use your old lip balm tube – just make sure it is cleaned out well! All you would do is make sure the bottom is screwed down all the way and then use a small funnel (like those featured in the post) to pour your waxy liquid into the tube. Let it harden completely and it is ready to use! Good luck!
