Do you have a new rental or room in your house that has a funky smell that just won’t go away? Yea, we’ve been there. It’s bad enough that your family members have to live with it, just imagine if you have unexpected guests that can smell it too (gasp!). That’s why we’ve put together a list of 6 natural air freshener that you can use to battle those gross lingering odors and have your house smelling so fresh and so clean!
Why Natural Air Fresheners?
Before we get into listing the types of natural air fresheners that you can use, let’s talk about the why. When you use natural air fresheners in your home, you reduce the amount of exposure to toxic ingredients that synthetic air fresheners can leave behind. Natural air fresheners work especially well for those who have family members with sensitivity to fragrances or have asthma. You can also control what ingredients you are using in your home. So you can continue to keep your family safe from otherwise harmful chemicals. Alright, now that we got that out the way, let’s get to our list of natural air fresheners:
Baking Soda
This tried and true method has been used for decades and is the most simple, cheapest way to freshen up your home. Sprinkle some baking soda on your carpet or couch and vacuum it up after 10-15 minutes. You can also fill a mason jar half way with the baking soda, and place it in your fridge or bathroom to tackle those reoccurring odors. Add Essential oils to the baking soda to give it a little more oomph (take a peek at #4 for more information on Essential oils).
Vinegar
This method may seem counterproductive, but hear us out! Yes, everyone knows that vinegar has its own funky smell but the smell goes away, promise. Just add vinegar to a spray bottle and spray on countertops, stovetops, toilets, etc. just as you would any other cleaner and wipe away with a clean towel. *WARNING: DO NOT USE VINEGAR ON GRANITE, MARBLE OR HARDWOOD FLOORS, IT WILL DAMAGE IT.*
Vodka
Say what? Yes! Vodka works just like the vinegar method in a sense that it has a very strong odor when cleaning with it, but the smell goes away (along with the foul smell you were trying to get rid of in the first place). Just spray, wipe and wait! You can use any ol’ cheap vodka, it’ll work just as good. *THIS METHOD CAN BE USED ON GRANITE AND MARBLE COUNTERTOPS*
Essential Oils
Essential oils are so versatile and can be used in so many different ways. You can drop some oils in a diffuser and let the light scent fill your home, or the oils can be added to any of the ingredients listed in 1-3. All you have to do is add 2-3 drops of Essential oil to the baking soda, vinegar or vodka and use as directed above (now that’s easy, huh?). The best thing about Essential oils is that they come in so many different fragrances and blends, that we’re sure you’ll be able to find the perfect scent for you and your family.
Coffee Grounds
Did you know that coffee grounds did more than just help us kick start our mornings? Here’s how to do it: place unused coffee grounds in a mason jar, old pantyhose or a bowl and stick it in a corner of your smelly room. This will help suck up all the bad smelling order and lock it within the coffee grounds; and let’s face it, who doesn’t love the smell of coffee in their home? MmmYum!
Charcoal
Have you ever heard of Bamboo Charcoal? If you haven’t, then you’re in for a treat! This is one of the natural air fresheners we’re going to talk about. Bamboo Charcoal is bamboo that is burned at a very high temperature; once it’s turned into a powder, it becomes very porous. This is a great way to absorb any unwanted odors around the house. It is typically placed in sachet pouches that you can easily place anywhere in your home to absorb odors. You can find charcoal sachet pouches here.
So whether you’re tackling an old or new funky smell in your home, these natural air fresheners will help you fight off the odor so you can enjoy the sweet smell of victory!
