Divorce Rings: New Ways to Find Closure and Move On

At the beginning of a relationship, it’s all about love and commitment. No one goes into a marriage expecting it to end in divorce. A newer trend that’s becoming increasingly popular is the purchase of divorce rings. This piece of jewelry can be a great way to symbolically move on. Whether it’s for yourself or for a friend who’s navigating a hard time, this accessory may help one move on to a new chapter just a little more confident.

What are Divorce Rings?

For some, it’s easier getting over a relationship that’s ended, or they themselves are the person who filed for the separation in the first place. For others, it’s harder, and mourning the divorce is a long process. But either way, a divorce is the start of a new chapter. Just as engagement rings symbolize the commitment of a relationship, and wedding bands are the official symbol of the union of marriage, divorce rings are our personal symbol of moving on.

Typically it’s a piece of jewelry bought for oneself, or with a friend. The ring itself is to help someone not feel a loss when the wedding band and/or engagement ring is removed.

Why Wear Divorce Rings

A divorce ring is a ring worn to remind someone of their reclaim of individuality and celebrate courage, strength, and independence. It represents leaving that relationship behind and taking the first steps toward embracing newfound freedom. While also sometimes put in place of the wedding band to not feel that empty feeling without it, most of the time they’re worn in a different location.

Where to Wear a Divorce Ring

While some women may replace the current rings on their left ring fingers with divorce rings (where a traditional western wedding band goes), many opt to place it on a different finger and even hand entirely. Especially when open to new relationships, removing any question of marriage from the left ring finger is ideal. But in general, divorce rings can be worn on any finger that feels right index finger, pinky finger, middle finger (ahem!) – whatever works best for the divorcee.

Re-setting A Engagement Ring

One way to make divorce rings is to take what was originally engagement rings or wedding bands and repurpose them! That diamond would look fabulous in a new setting picked out by you, or add it to a few other diamonds. Don’t waste its beauty by keeping it hidden in a jewelry box. Just like what this divorce is doing to a person, the ring it too can change for the better!

Of course, you could always sell it and buy something new…

Phrase or Sentiment

“I am enough” or “This too shall pass”, among others, are strong phrases that can help someone get through a hard time in their life. They’re powerful and remind us that the only opinion that matters is that of our own. Maybe it’s the date the divorce was finalized. Or maybe it’s the date you became your better self. Words and numbers can hold so much meaning.

A Statement Piece

Jewelry doesn’t have to say anything. If it’s loved and appreciated by the wearer, then that’s enough. Buying a beautiful diamond divorce ring, or keeping it simple with just silver metal, buy it for no one else but you, and that’ll mean more than anything.

Symbol

Maybe it’s a ring with a bird representing freedom, or a heart representing the love for oneself – a symbol can hold so much meaning. And just like tattoos, there are sooooo many to choose from. When wearing a divorce ring we like to keep it sweet and simple.

Like death, the death of a marriage is something no one wants to talk about. But divorce rings are bringing normalization and support to those going through this new chapter. Help yourself or someone you know by giving them peace with a divorce ring.
