4-Day Luxury Galapagos Cruise Itinerary by Golden Galapagos Cruises
Day 1: San Cristobal Island, Galapagos
Morning: San Cristobal Airport and Transfer to your Vessel
Afternoon: David Rodriguez Breeding Center
A visit to the David Rodriguez Breeding Center provides information about the origin and evolution of the giant tortoise and explains why the center is so vital in safeguarding the future of these incredible creatures. Walking through the trails of the reserve, you can see baby tortoises being reared in semi-natural conditions – a brilliant demonstration of the commitment the local people have to preserve the wildlife that makes the Galapagos so special.
We were incredibly lucky to witness two tortoises mating on our hike, which is a rare sight. The guide told us that tortoises will mate for 3 to 4 hours. We also learned that when mating, the male will be on top and make loud grunting sound (which we could all hear), while the female will be on the bottom and be still and silent. Male tortoises and turtles have long tails, due to the fact that the male reproductive organs are in the tail and the length is required to reach the female past the shell.
It was a short day due to embarkation, so we only had 1 outing and spent the rest of the day enjoying the boat and being briefed on the day ahead. Our naturalist explained the concept of Darwin finches and showed the different beaks that evolved depending on the island and source of food it had access to. It was day 1, and we already learned so much about evolution, nature, and the Galapagos islands.

Day 2: Espanola Island, Galapagos
Morning: Suarez Point, Galapagos Islands
Suarez Point is packed with wildlife and is best explored by following the circular walking trail. This memorable walk will take you past nesting sites of large colonies of Nazca and blue-footed boobies and mockingbirds. Unique to Española island are also the beautiful waved albatross, that can be seen majestically launching themselves out across the ocean from the cliffs and the red and green marine iguanas. A geological highlight is several blow holes, capable of shooting water 25 m into the air, that make for a spectacular photo.
As we started the trail, we came across baby seal lions sunning on the black rocks. Little sea lions are not allowed to swim without their parents and are often found hanging out in the shallow rock ponds created by waves. Further down the way, we came across a large colony of adult sea lions lying on the sand periodically screaming out at flies and shaking their heads to get the pesky insects away from their eyes.
The highlight was seeing a human-like interaction between a mother, her newborn baby, and a juvenile child, as they fought for her breastmilk, annoying the mom in the process. The newborn sea lion was loudly nursing while the juvenile, who was clearly only recently weaned off breastfeeding, kept trying to get at another nipple. The mother would yell loudly at him to leave her alone, and he would scaredly rush away, only to approach her from another angle. Finally, the tired mother got up and plopped over to the water with her newborn and older child following her in. You can see the whole interaction in the photos below and as parents, we can definitely relate to this mother’s feelings.
The water there was known to be a nursery, a shallow protected water where new babies learned to swim and play around. The young sea lions are extremely curious and friendly and try to take a nibble at anyone sitting nearby. One of them, probably in search of their mother, kept sniffing all the humans on the sand, which looked like puppy dog kisses: “Are you my mommy?”
Despite later seeing and hearing amazing stories of Nazca boobies and seeing lots of other animals on the way, this was still the highlight of our day and maybe even trip.
Midday break:
As we were waiting for our lunch, the naturalist announced that there was a huge dolphin pod in front of the yacht. We all ran out to see it, but what we actually saw was unexpected. More than 100 dolphins were jumping, hunting, and playing all around the boat as we were going at a pretty fast speed. They were jumping and splashing everywhere. We did not know where to look. I looked over to the naturalist and with all seriousness proclaimed: “We HAVE to go join them!” He laughed until he saw the look on my face. The naturalist went over to the captain to get permission to go into the water. Luckily the captain agreed, citing that the pod seemed calm and playful, and we were in safe waters.
I don’t think we have EVER gotten into our swimsuits this fast. There was no time for wetsuits; we had to brave the cold water. We jumped into the panga with our snorkel gear and sped around the pod of dolphins. As we were racing around them, they kept jumping and playing. We got ahead of the pod and jumped into the water: 1…2…3…
Before we could see them, we heard a deafening echo-location sound… it was everywhere, it was beautiful. And then suddenly hundreds of dolphins surrounded us. They swam through hunting, singing, playing, and jumping like we weren’t there. Within a moment it was over. We got back on the boat and I exclaimed: “We have to do it again!!!!’ This time the naturalist didn’t hesitate “Ok, let’s go!”
So we went around again and this time we knew what to expect. Breathtaking! Spiritual! Magical! Those are the words I use to describe the experience. The second time we could actually comprehend the magnitude of what was happening around us. Again: the deafening sound of echo-location, beautiful ocean beings all around us. And just like that, it was over.
The rest of the day was in a blur. It felt like we just had the most spiritual experience….
Afternoon: Gardner Bay, Gardner Islet, Osborn Islet
The pristine white sandy beach of Gardner Bay dotted with sea lions provides a perfect spot to relax and kayaking or paddleboarding is a fantastic way to observe the large number of waved albatross who use this beach as a breeding site. A short panga ride will take you to the Gardner and Osborn Islets, which are superb locations for snorkeling with young sea lions and a variety of colorful tropical fish and corals.
This was probably the most beautiful beach we visited, though at this point animal interactions would always be the highlight of each excursion. There were many sea lions basking in the sun. We simply found a spot nearby and watched the sea lion babies show off for the camera.
Day 3: Floreana Island, Galapagos
Morning: Cormorant Point, Champion Islet
Cormorant Point features two contrasting beaches: one with green-tinted sand due to the high content of olivine crystals, and another with pure white sand (commonly known as ‘Flour Beach’) derived from pulverized coral. The saltwater lagoon is a must-see as it is frequented by one of the largest populations of Galapagos flamingos as well as other shorebirds such as stilts, white-cheeked pintails and large-billed flycatchers. A panga ride to Champion Islet, an extinct shield volcano, provides a fantastic opportunity for snorkeling in an area that is known for having a high diversity of fish.
We woke up really early to beat the other boats going to the same location and headed to Champion Islet. We had seen a lot of sea lions but had yet to experience one underwater. Having been to the Galapagos before, I knew it was something that would happen eventually and that it would be the experience of a lifetime. The snorkeling in Champion Islet was incredible: crystal clear waters, lots of white and black tip sharks resting on the bottom, schools of colorful fish, eagle rays, and turtles. There was marine life all around us.
As we were swimming in and out of different caves, all of a sudden I heard a distinct sound one can never forget: i knew there was a sea lion nearby, but I could not see it. All of a sudden, a huge bubble pops in front of my face and a playful sea lion swerves around my body, creating a mini tornado in the water. I gesture to my daughter to come play (she has been waiting for this moment) and we spend the next few minutes flipping around and playing peekaboo with the sea lion, as he spins around showing off his acrobatic skills. After that experience, nothing else matters. We have seen it all, it seems. An interaction like that is exactly why you go to Galapagos.
Afternoon: Post Office Bay, The Baroness’ Lookout
Post Office Bay is a man-made site that offers an insight into a remarkable mailing tradition developed by British whalers in the 18th century, that visitors can still take part in today. The beach here provides for good snorkeling and kayaking, and it is also possible to descend into and walk through a lava tube. Next, take a panga ride to the Baroness’ Lookout, a volcanic rock formation named after an Australian baroness, who visited the island in the 1930’s and is believed to have mysteriously disappeared. A short trail leads to a brilliant vantage point with panoramic views of the surrounding mangroves and coastline.
Post Office Bay is an underrated experience in the Galapagos where most of the focus is on wildlife. Back in the 18th century, when Galapagos islands had no inhabitants, sailors would leave their letters in the mailbox on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and when other sailors would come through, they would pick up the letter intended for the destination they were going to and deliver them once home in their own country. The tradition stayed, and you can now do the same.
We stepped onto the island and walked over to the old box that housed hundreds of postcards in a plastic bag. The visitors get to go through all the postcards looking for the ones closest to their hometown, as well as drop their own off. No stamp is required. When you find one you can hand-deliver it yourself or send it to the post office when in your home country; you take it with you and become a part of history. There’s no telling when your postcard will get delivered. Some sit there for years till someone is able to pick them up and deliver them, and others get picked up the same day.
Day 4: Santa Cruz Island and departure at Baltra Airport
Morning: Mosquera Islet
Mosquera Islet is a small, flat, sandy islet located between Baltra and North Seymour islands. With no fixed trail, you are free to explore the beautiful surroundings on foot, where you will encounter a large population of sea lions, shorebirds and the striking Sally Lightfoot crabs that cling to the dark rocks. The numerous coral reefs also make it a fantastic site for snorkeling and catching sight of a range of marine life including sharks, turtles, and rays.
We got to see a massive ray that was so big we had mistaken it for a shark, fur sea lions sitting on the cliff, and lots of frigate birds. We couldn’t believe that our visit had come to an end. 4 days is certainly not enough for the Galapagos, but it was incredible how much we got to see and do in such a short time.
