Celebrating Valentine’s Day with Acts of Heart

This post was written by me through an activation with HireInfluence on behalf of BIOLIFE4D. Although I received compensation for participating in the campaign, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This Valentine’s Day, as you are preparing the perfect treats for your kids to take to school, filling out cards for grandparents, and making dinner reservations for the perfect romantic night out, stop and reflect on what love means for your family. Romantic love is exciting but what about a more meaningful and all encompassing love that you can share with everyone you meet? What about love that can be expressed in little, creative ways that can brighten a stranger’s day or make the world a better place for us all? Isn’t that love worthy of some of our attention during this season of love? Wouldn’t shift to a focus on love like that change our perspective and be a more valuable use of our energy. This Valentine’s Day, we want to challenge you to think about ways to model this kind of love for your children so we send our kids out into the world with a heart for others instead of a heart for just themselves. It is easier than you think to do this and we want to share with you how we are celebrating Valentine’s Day with Acts of Heart!

Mentor: Make a Difference in the Life of a Child

As parents, we so often take for granted the difference that an adult role model or mentor really makes in the life of a child. For most of us, we are either raising our children together with our spouse under one roof or as part of a larger blended family. Many of us have extended family as well with aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins either down the street or just a phone call away. Unfortunately, for a large part of our society, this is not the case. Take a walk through the inner-city streets, the projects or even just the low-income neighborhoods present in every city and state, and look around. There you will see young children through young adults who are trying to make it in this world virtually all alone. Whether it is kids living in foster care, living with an elderly grandparent, or living with an overtired, overworked single mom, there are millions of children in need of some quality adult attention. An invaluable resource for these children is a mentor. If you or someone you know wants to make a difference in the life of a child or teen, consider becoming a volunteer mentor.

Think about safety as you prepare for your new baby

When you’re expecting, you’re working to prepare your family and your home for your new baby, from painting the nursery to diving into parenting books. One of the most important ways to prepare is to think about safety precautions, especially safe sleep, safe stress relief, and water safety. In the Tampa Bay area alone, nearly 200 children under the age of six have died in the last five years (2012-2016) from the top three causes of preventable child death: suffocation caused by unsafe sleep practices, abusive head trauma caused by shaking a baby and drowning from lack of supervision around water.

These tragedies can happen to anyone, and every member of our community – not just parents – bears the responsibility of educating themselves on these dangers. While you’re preparing for your new baby’s arrival, take a few moments to learn the measures you can take once your baby is born to prevent needless child deaths in our community.

Parents as the Problem: Why We Need to Stop Over-Scheduling & Stressing Our Kids

Children learn through play. We see it, we hear it, we know it, yet as parents many of us seem to, at some point in our children’s early development, forget it. We no longer think they should have long, lazy days on a playground and rather expect them to sit at a desk. We do not encourage them to be active and creative, but rather to work at a desk and in front of a computer. We completely forget that there is no substitute for 3-D learning and hand our children an iPad claiming we don’t want them to fall behind so we must educate them with all the latest technology.

Our society seems to have come to a point where kids no longer get to just be kids. Between school and extracurricular activities, there is no time for simple existence, reflection, imagination and creative play. We aren’t building budding architects with wooden blocks, but rather with Auto-Cad and 3D printers for kids. While clearly there are some benefits to the new-fangled technology, our persistent state of overdrive with our children may also be causing mental, emotional and physical stress that is simply too much for their young bodies.

Using The 5 Love Languages With Your Children

Love is one of those words that have multiple meanings and yet unless you know how you express love individually, it can be rather challenging when discovering another person’s love language. Your children are no exception. According to Gary Chapman, the author of The Five Love Languages, there are five very distinct ways in which a person feels “loved”. He uses the love languages to fill their “love tank”- or even better – to have it overflowing, it’s best to discover not only your own love language but that of your partner. Well, let’s take the same logic behind the successful love language talk and apply it to your children.
