The research is clear pertaining to the many benefits of exercise. Yet, as moms, we tend to push off the need for exercise – or basically anything that involves ourselves. We make excuses – no time, too tired, we don’t know how, we can’t afford it – you name it, we’ve said it. But the truth is, excuses are just excuses – they don’t make us better, they don’t make us stronger – the only way to get better is to work harder, work better, and try harder. The excuses for exercise become our excuses for life; if we continue to not put ourselves first, we will fall into a habitual routine of never taking care of ourselves. It’s more than just exercise, it’s who we are – if we are truly important to ourselves, we’d make time for us, to be the person we want to be.

You know you’ve had a good workout when the next day or two your muscles are sore. However, you may feel you’ve gone overboard if your muscles are so sore that you can barely walk or lift your arms. Sometimes all you need to do is a little bit of pre- and post-workout stretching to alleviate some of the muscle soreness you’re experiencing. After all, nothing is worse than having to skip a day of working out because you’re too sore to move.
Even the most avid fitness junkies will skip the stretching portion of a workout. To many, it feels like a waste of time – after you’ve put in an hour or two of hard work the last thing you want to do is sit on the floor and stretch! But research shows that it’s one of the most important elements of a person’s daily exercise regimen. Not only does it decrease the risk of injury, but it also helps muscles work more effectively by increasing blood flow and allowing for full range of motion. Luckily, there is now an amazing tool that many fitness advocates suggest using as part of your daily stretching routine to get the most out of your muscles and dramatically decrease soreness: the foam roller.

Our family is one of health and fitness. I am a runner, a yogi, and an avid fitness lover. My husband is an active duty Marine, and fitness is in his daily regime. Frequently our family goes on runs, hikes, and bike rides together. I take my three daughters with me to workout groups and they sit in the jogging stroller on long runs. We love to be active and healthy, and our dog Pendleton is no exception to this.
When my husband and I first adopted Pendleton we would take her to the dog park or the dog beach almost every weekend. I would come home during my lunch break during the week and take her on a long walk around the neighborhood or let her play in the field behind our apartment complex. As Pendleton got older and our family grew, our outings became less frequent but her love for the outdoors never ceased. But we stopped taking her on our long adventures out because she would become visibly weary, and we didn’t want to exhaust her. This continued for years until recently when we made the switch to Iams quality dog food.
Meet the creator of the yoga-hybrid DVD Yogalosophy, Mandy Ingber. As popular as yoga is around the world, Yogalosophy is in a world of its own and it’s just in time for Mother’s Day. Her second book, Yogalosophy For Inner Strength: 12 Weeks to Heal Your Heart and Embrace Joy will be released May 10, 2016.
Be prepared to conquer any doubts and apprehensions about your body since becoming a mom. As Mandy’s body changed, she too had to adjust to not being thin and in shape – leaving the body image she adored behind with only a 50 lb weight gain to comfort her – and no baby to show for it.
