Today’s current environment adds an entirely new layer of burdens and concerns. 

So, what’s the answer to having a calmer, less hectic day? Simply dialing back on responsibilities? Saying “no” more often? Not likely, these days. Instead, parents can incorporate holistic remedies like ylang ylang oil for natural stress relief. And let’s be honest, we could all use some more of that.

The Origin of Ylang Ylang Oil

Perhaps some of the relaxing properties of this fragrant oil hail from its source, the ylang ylang tree (Cananga odorata), which only grows in tropical and sub-tropical climates. Who wouldn’t thrive in a beautiful tropical paradise? 

Ylang ylang oil (pronounced “EE-lang EE-lang” oil), is extracted from the flowers of this unique evergreen tree, whose name means “wilderness” in Tagalog, a Philippine language. The tree has long, droopy branches of oblong, somewhat wavy leaves. Interspersed between the leaves are highly fragrant flowers, which emerge white, turn a pale green color and then change to a golden yellow blossom as they mature. Each flower is composed of six, six-inch long petals. The flowers have a distinct and exotic aroma that can be described as fresh, floral and fruity, and is similar to jasmine. The scent can be smelled from far away–especially in the evening, when it is strongest because the flowers are being pollinated by night moths. 

Ylang ylang oil is commonly extracted via steam distillation from the fully open flowers and is highly used in the perfume industry. In fact, the top notes of the iconic Chanel No. 5 perfume come from ylang ylang oil.

Ylang Ylang Oil Benefits

Now that you know more about where ylang ylang oil comes from, let’s take a look at its benefits. Ylang ylang oil has been found to promote a sense of calmness and relaxation. It can boost mood, reduce depression and anxiety, lower blood pressure and decrease heart rate. 

According to an article published in Phytotherapy Research titled, Relaxing Effect of Ylang Ylang Oil on Humans After Transdermal Absorption, ylang ylang oil applied directly to the skin caused a significant decrease in blood pressure. Subjects rated themselves more calm and more relaxed than subjects in the control group.

Ylang ylang oil inhalation has also been proven effective for increasing feelings of calmness. An article published in Planta Medica titled, Evaluation of the Harmonizing Effect of Ylang-Ylang Oil on Humans after Inhalation, found that ylang ylang oil caused “significant decreases in blood pressure and pulse rate, as well as significant increases of subjective attentiveness and alertness.” 

With these scientifically proven, wonderful benefits, it may make sense to give ylang ylang oil a try during stressful times.

Three Popular Uses 

If you’re not already familiar with essential oils, there are several ways they can be used. Here are a few suggestions for making the most of your ylang ylang oil.

1. Apply

Essential oils may be applied to the skin, but are very strong and can burn if used alone. Be sure to dilute ylang ylang oil by adding one to two drops to a carrier oil, such as coconut, almond, or jojoba oil, and blend before applying to the skin. Always test a small area first, avoid contact with the eyes, the mouth and broken skin, and do not ingest essential oils. 

2. Inhale

Ylang ylang oil can be added to your oil diffuser. Just fill the diffuser with water and add 3-5 drops of ylang ylang oil. Use ylang ylang alone, or create a custom blend by adding other calming oils such as lavender or frankincense oils as well.

3. Clean

More and more, people are choosing all-natural cleaning products over chemical-laden alternatives. For an added boost of calm in your cleaning routine, incorporate ylang ylang oil in your typical spring cleaning toolkit. Just add a few drops to your existing essential oil spray for some less stress housework.

Ylang ylang oil can be found in many popular retail locations, such as large health food chains and independent health food shops. Local essential oil distributors can be a great source of ylang ylang oil and knowledge. They can share tips, recommend blends and offer oils for your other holistic needs as well. And, of course, in today’s current environment, there are a multitude of online options for hassle-free delivery right to your door. A quick search online will bring up numerous choices.
