With the growing fad of farmhouse decor, it has probably taken over your entire house. The kitchen, dining room, living room, laundry room, heck, you may have even found a way to put it in the pantry with apron hooks and mason jars (don’t judge). If you are wondering what else you can “farmhouse”, search no further than your backyard! That less than fabulous plastic playhouse needs a makeover. Get to it!
Do’s And Dont’s Of Your Plastic Playhouse Makeover
Invest the time into reading the spray paint can. I know…BORING. However, this can save you tons of time, money, and energy. For example, you may not be able to paint unless the humidity, wind, and temperature cooperate. Make Alexa your meteorologist for this project or use your weather app on your phone to confirm the temperature, humidity, and wind prior to getting started on your project.
Be sure to allow enough time for painting and dry time. We are talking DAYS, not hours, for dry time. You will find that this is not a weekend project, rather a week-long project. The amount of time needed to paint is short, it’s the dry time that will make you antsy. Just plan on painting a coat and then set it aside for a day or two.
Spray painting is an art form. It is also SUPER messy. Be sure to save your manicure by using disposable gloves.
Supplies For Your Plastic Playhouse Makeover
To get this project underway you are going to need a few supplies. Load your cart with Rustoleum 2x Paint and Primer in your desired colors, Rustoleum Clear, Goo Gone (adhesive remover), dish soap, gloves, and a tarp or cardboard to paint on. If you plan on painting accent pieces such as the mailbox or the flag post, painting tape can come in handy to make sharp paint lines. The most important thing you will need for this plastic playhouse makeover is PATIENCE. You may be running low on this daily, but if you cheat and try to rush, you are really going to botch this makeover.

Makeover Process For Your Plastic Playhouse Makeover
Start with putting down the bones of the house by buying a new or used plastic playhouse or repurpose one that you already have. Try not to spend a fortune so that you can invest in the paint and accessories. Online buy/sell/trade websites and yard sales are great places to find affordable options.
Disassemble the plastic playhouse making sure to keep all the screws and caps. Remove the stickers with Goo Gone and wash the house really well with dish soap to clean off the adhesive remover. Make sure you dry the house well or allow to air dry. Lay the pieces to the plastic playhouse on something you want to paint on.
Lay down a tarp, or another barrier, to catch the excess paint. Paint the first coat being careful to not linger too long on one spot. A steady back and forth motion can help avoid the paint running and stay back at a distance according to the can. Less is more when painting with spray paint. You’re going to need to paint 2-3 coats of spray paint and 1-2 coats of clear coat. You heard that right! This project requires a ton of spray paint. Pay attention to the suggested dry time on the paint can. Warning: The door to your plastic playhouse is going to need the most love and spray paint.
There are a couple of details on the playhouse that can provide you with options for accents. Feel free to make these stand out with a pop of color, glitter paint, or metallic paint. Painting tape can help create sharp lines. Hint: You will also need to protect the house around the painting tape with cardboard as the spray paint can cast onto the house. Then you will have a speckled house!
Once you have allowed all the pieces to dry, reassemble the house. TaDa!! Your labor of love is almost complete!

The most precious window boxes can be made out of scrap wood from past projects. You won’t need much. Just a couple of 1×4 wood pieces, plywood, nails, and wood stain. Dressing these window boxes with flowers, fruit, tools, or holiday decor will be a fun and creative thing to do with your young’un.
