Spring Garden Tasks

The days are getting longer and the ground and air are warming up.  March is a month of new beginnings in nature and a time to welcome back your spring garden. Spring is our favorite time of year; we are looking forward to the warmer weather and our garden coming alive. Here are our top seven gardening jobs for this month.

Mend Your Lawn

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

Work on those bare patches in your grass from the winter frost or high traffic areas! Rake off any leaves and remove all debris, wood, or stones in the bare area. Use a spade or garden rake to scratch the soil 1 to 2 inches at the surface, once this ground is loosened apply a seed and soil mixture. We love the ease of Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair. Then water and watch your grass grow back!

Plant Your Summer Bulbs In Your Spring Garden

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

Get your caladium and other summer bulbs in by the end of March. Late winter, early spring is the perfect time to plant your summer bulbs. They are plentiful at retailers and the ground is perfect, not too muddy or cold. Just be sure to wait until after the last frost in your zone. Our favorite bulbs to plant in March for summer enjoyment are Elephant Ears, Canna lilies, and Caladium.

How Do Your Roses Grow?

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

The best time to prune roses is in late winter or early spring. Watch for signs of new growth on your roses in your spring garden, then prune. When pruning roses, your goal should be to open up the center and create a vase-like shape. Remove any crossing branches which can cause damage and encourage disease. Prune canes at a 45-degree angle sloping away from the bud to the desired height.  After pruning, make sure to clean up the surrounding area as these clipping if left under roses can lead to disease and pests.  After pruning be sure to feed your roses.

Explore New Plants For Your Spring Garden

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

Snowdrops are a relatively new to us plant, but once we learned about the variety we became obsessed. Snowdrops are a beautiful, low to the ground plant that blooms early in late winter or early spring. This perfect addition to your spring garden pops early and reminds us that spring is right around the corner during a very dreary period of the year. March is the perfect time to plant snowdrops for next year’s spring garden as snowdrops are best transferred as small plants, not bulbs.

It is Time to Deadhead New Growth Hydrangeas

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

Knowing when to prune your hydrangeas is critical to their blooms. If hydrangeas don’t bloom for a season, it’s usually due to one of three reasons: They didn’t get enough sun, an early frost killed the buds, or they were pruned at the wrong time. How and when you prune Hydrangeas depends on which type of hydrangeas you have in your spring garden.

If you have a variety of hydrangeas that bloom on new wood March is the perfect time to prune your hydrangeas in most parts of the country. New wood hydrangeas varieties include Limelights, Annabelle, Panicles, and Endless Summer. Prune these plants down to one to three feet above the ground and leave some older canes on the exterior of the plant to support new growth. Get ready to enjoy a bounty of hydrangea blooms this summer!

Plan Your Spring Garden

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

March is a great time to evaluate your current garden: what is working, what never flowers, or what has outgrown the space? Now is a great time to plant new flowers for your summer and spring garden. Make plans to remove or thin out existing shrubs, bulbs, and plants. Review online forums and consult magazines on what garden arrangement or pairings you like and what flowers will do well in your area. Keep things like sun vs. shade, drainage, amount of attention required (we are looking at you daylilies), and pesky deer and other animals that may wreak havoc on your spring garden (we love deer-resistant options).

Practice Your Flower Arranging

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

Order yourself flowers and become an expert on floral arrangements. Part of the joy of a spring garden is using clippings for in-home flower arrangements. Poppy Flower not only provides beautiful delivery flowers but a fun experience of learning how to arrange and display flowers in your home. The tutorial walks you through each arrangement. By the time your spring garden is blooming, you will be an expert on floral arrangements!

Netflix and Chill: Our Current Favorite Shows

While dates may look a bit different this year, a night snuggled up watching a new tv series sounds like a great date night in. Take time to enjoy this season’s cooler evenings. Here are some of our recent favorite tv series to binge-watch.

Netflix: The Queen’s Gambit

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

Netflix’s number one series, The Queen’s Gambit, is hard to describe without sounding boring but it is SO good. Set during the Cold War era,  orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world. Not only does this series educate even the novice on chess, but it also offers insight into the complicated friendships of a young woman in the 1950/60s and the pressures of fame and internal demons as she triumphs in a mostly male-dominated sport.

Netflix: Dream Home Makeover

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

With a home makeover and design shows being all the rage right now, probably because we are all staying at home more than ever, this show is a great one to binge to get home inspiration. Power couple Syde and Shea McGee share insight into their family life, business, and home makeovers. McGee’s style aesthetic is light, bright, and beautifully unique. In our opinion, it is the perfect mix of transitional modern and welcome break from the rustic, shabby chic look. Netflix’s Dream Home Makeover mirrors everything we want our own home to look and feel like.

Netflix: Bridgerton

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

This show has an understandable following and hype. It is an interesting combination of Downton Abby and Lady Whistledown brings in a Gossip Girl element. The love story is stirring and the beautiful spring gardens, costume, and cast have you hooked. The storyline follows the eldest daughter Daphne Bridgerton as she enters her first season and her relationship with Duke of Hastings, one of London’s most eligible bachelors. Creator Chris Van Dusen was inspired by historical debate over Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz’s possible African ancestry “to base the show in an alternative history in which Queen Charlotte’s mixed-race heritage was not only well-established but was transformative for Black people and other people of color in England.”

HBO: The Undoing

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

The Undoing is the story of Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman), a very put together psychologist whose world falls apart when her husband, Jonathan (Hugh Grant), is linked to the death of Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis), a fellow parent at Reardon, their children’s private school. Grace Fraser quickly learns this is not their only connection: the truth of her husband and Elena Alves’s relationship unfolds. When Elena Alves is discovered dead, the struggle of the Fraser family, court hearings, and the ending will all shock you! This is great for those Big Little Lies fans!

HBO: The Flight Attendant

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

An HBO series based on Chris Bohjalin’s book The Flight Attendant features an American flight attendant, Cassie Bowden, who is a hot mess, party girl. After one of her escapades, she wakes up with not only a hangover but the dead body of one of her passengers and lovers. She is afraid to call the police, she cleans up the mess. As shocking as this is when it happens all within the first episode, over the next seven episodes you follow Cassie through her muddy relationships and life as she attempts to find the killer to prove her innocence and discovers herself.

Best Martial Compromise: Frame TV

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

While we are on the subject of tv: this tv maybe a marriage saver! If your husband wants a big tv on a featured wall in your family room and you prefer to look at beautiful, colorful artwork instead of a black box on your wall the Samsung Frame TV offers a great compromise. It is designed to look like artwork on the wall when not in TV mode. The bracket included on the back allows your TV to lay flat against the wall. You can use interchangeable frames (white, dark wood, black, and light wood). The art mode allows you to select and upload a variety of artwork options to the screen so the TV looks like actual art.

Beauty Refresh

Your spring garden may not be the only thing that needs a refresh. Below you will find our tips and tricks to refresh your at home beauty and skincare routine. These products are tested and loved by all!

At Home Microcurrent: NuFace

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

This miraculous handheld microcurrent device helps to lift your face where you have signs of aging. Many are skeptical at first, but holy moly does this work! There is proven, clinical evidence that microcurrent works to lift sagging jowls and perk up your face, among many other benefits. Consider this 2012 clinical trial testing the effect of microcurrent where treatment satisfaction among patients was over 70%.

The NuFACE mini is a petite microcurrent facial toning device that helps improve facial contour, tone, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Begin with a clean, dry face. Apply a mask-like layer of the gel primer to the area being treated as a conductor. Since this quickly dries out, just apply to the section you plan to treat first. And before each section, apply the gel. This should be pain-free; if you feel anything you may need to use more primer.  Using medium pressure on the face and light pressure on the neck, glide NuFACE in an upward motion. Electrical currents flow through the two silver balls, positive and negative, with a tiny, safe amount of electrical current. Because you are “exercising” the muscle with the microcurrent it helps to promote the drainage of fluid which acts as an instant de-puffer. In just five minutes a day, you’ll notice instant and lasting results.

Beauty: Facial Razors

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

Don’t call it face shaving, it is at-home dermaplaning! Now that our time with esthetician may be more limited, we are taking advantage of at-home spa treatments. Dermaplaning is an easy process that can make a big difference in your appearance. Dermaplaning enables collagen stimulation, deeper product penetration, and smoother makeup application. At home dermaplaning may seem intimidating: will I cut myself? Will the hair grow back thicker, dark, corser?  These little razors make at home dermaplaning so much easier! They miraculously shed your face of peach fuzz and dead skin. Your face is left baby-smooth!

Exfoliate: Glycolic Acid Pads

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

These Glycolic Acid pads work as well or better than their brand name counterparts by gently exfoliating and moisturizing to help reduce fine lines, discoloration, and acne. Resulting in smoother and brighter skin. Gently wipe glycolic pad across clean skin, avoiding the eye area. These are great because the glycolic levels can be adjusted based on your skin’s tolerance and needs: available in 10%, 15%, and 20% glycolic.

Microfiber Facial Cloths

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

It recently came to our attention how critical it is to use a clean towel and fresh pillowcase after any type of exfoliant of your face. This may seem like common sense but we will confess we were using the same towel we used for our body on our face after washing and not always dermaplaning on a clean sheet day. These microfiber facial cloths are ideal for removing makeup, grease, oil, and dead skin cells without chemicals, exfoliate the skin and leave it smooth, soft, and glowing. They come in a large pack that is perfect for keeping beside your sink for simply drying your face after washing. These microfiber cloths dry quickly and will not retain any odors!

Best Face Mask: THE ORDINARY AHA 30% + BHA 2%

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

This is honestly a mask that everyone needs to know about and for only $7 needs to have in their skincare arsenals. This treatment exfoliates at multiple levels in the skin to fight acne and restore an even, radiant tone. It also smooths the skin’s texture and reduces the look of fine lines with regular use. The alpha-hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin’s top layers for a brighter, more radiant look.

Heated Lash Curler: Grande Cosmetics LASH-LIFT

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

We love this heated eyelash curler as a way to refresh your lashes from day-to-night. You can use this heated lash lift after work before the happy hour to refresh your morning makeup and apply the right amount of gentle heat to revitalize and lift lashes. Unlike traditional lash curlers that can lead to breakage or mascara will get stuck to, GrandeLASH-LIFT curls lashes without crimping or pinching like traditional lash curlers.

Face Lift Sheet Mask: 7 Piece V Line Shaping Face Masks

Spring Garden: 20 Things We Are Digging For March {2021}

These v-line shape masks are something we can actually thank quarantine for; we learned about these after going down a YouTube rabbit hole and are so thankful! Your jawline will never be the same: this helps to tighten and define the jawline, reduce the appearance of double chins, slim your face, and restore firmness. This is great to counteract the carbohydrates and wine quarantine has also provided us!

We look forward to sharing more of our favorites for the “Best of April” next month. We wish you a fabulous March in your spring garden and hope that April brings a lot of sunshine! May this list inspire you to refresh your spring garden and your beauty routine, take time to stay cozy, and unwind with some great television on those still brisk evenings. Remember to appreciate this season while looking forward to those summer nights. Whatever your best of March looks like, take time to appreciate everything you are doing.
