An entire series seems to have emerged out of nowhere, spawning devotion across a wide range of readers: Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. Its unusual origins seem fitting given the story itself. Are you ready to join the Princess Posse? This review gives a parent-focused breakdown of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series: what it is, who it is for, no spoilers, but everything you need to know before buying or reading it.

What Is the Dungeon Crawler Carl Series? A Parent-Friendly Introduction to the LitRPG Books by Matt Dinniman

First and foremost, Dungeon Crawler Carl is a science fiction and fantasy series. Powerful aliens from across the galaxy destroy all man-made structures on Earth and plan to mine the Earth for resources. Survivors find themselves in a massive underground dungeon filled with monsters. The main characters are Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut. The dungeon functions as an intergalactic game show broadcast to powerful aliens across the galaxy. An AI controls the dungeon and controls the rules of each level or floor of the dungeon.

At this point, some readers may be thinking they are not interested. Particularly if they do not usually enjoy science fiction or fantasy. People whose interests lie with romantasy, up-market fiction, and more “serious” books might not give Dungeon Crawler Carl a try. But that would be a mistake, so let’s keep going. The books are written for adult audiences, and the genre and tone might not be familiar, but this series has a lot to recommend it.

What Is LitRPG and Is the Dungeon Crawler Carl Series a Good Introduction to the Genre?

When you enter the Dungeon, you are entering the world of video games. LitRPG is a relatively new genre. Much like video games (ex. Fallout, Elden Ring, or The Witcher) and tabletop role-playing games, the characters face challenges, level up, have an inventory, fight bosses, and interact in a world with video game-like rules. Dungeon Crawler Carl is widely considered one of the best entry points into LitRPG books. The reason for this is that Dinniman uses the mechanics of the game to serve the story rather than getting bogged down in the minutiae.

You do not need to know anything about video games to understand and enjoy the story. Everything feels organic because the AI-generated rules and level notifications feel like a natural part of the game show format. Individuals who are immersed in gaming see it as a love letter to their culture. But it also feels familiar to the parent who listened to their child passionately discuss the lore of their games or watched as their child showed them how to play and win a beloved video game. But beyond these factors, what really draws readers from across age groups and interests is the relationships built and sustained throughout the EIGHT book series.

The Dungeon Crawler Carl Books in Order

How can this series just be making it to the big time when there are eight books? It is an interesting story. The initial books in the series were originally self-published by Dinniman using the online publisher Royal Road on Amazon. It amassed a cult following. Penguin Random House picked up the print rights in 2024, and through word of mouth, it took off. The eighth book, A Parade of Horribles, was released in hardback in May 2026.

This series is available in Kindle, hardcover, and audio book formats narrated by Jeff Hays. Although you can get the first eight books now, you must read them in order:

As you proceed through the book, Carl, Donut (and other fascinating and funny characters who will capture your heart), proceed to the next level of the dungeon. The books have it all: combat, potions, fairies, ogres, witches, pantheons of forgotten gods, an AI with a foot fetish, spiders, an iron tangle of a subway, faction wars, political allegiances, intrigue, and a lot of bombs. After you finish the first book, you will feel compelled to keep reading. After you get to the fourth book, you will be hooked on this page turner.

Is the Dungeon Crawler Carl Book Series Appropriate for Teens? An Honest Content Review

The book is written for an audience that can handle graphic combat, dark humor, and adult language. There is some sexual humor, crude jokes, and an ongoing reference to a foot fetish. This is dark comedy. The AI game show format, in which the characters are forced to compete, means that the dungeon is designed for spectacle and suffering.

But from this darkness comes the reason that this book series resonates with so many diverse readers. Author Matt Dinniman weaves themes of found families, friendship, resilience, loyalty, and human connection into this post-apocalyptic story. Both the male and female characters are fully realized and evolving characters with flaws and strengths. Carl and Princess Donut model genuine courage throughout the dungeon crawl.

Parents of teens should read at least the first book themselves before passing it along to get a sense of the violence, language, and themes. As a parent, you know your child’s maturity level and tolerance for dark themes.

This blog’s official book review rating is: adult/mature teen.
It is a great book to draw in reluctant readers who enjoy video and role-playing games.

Who Is Princess Donut?

The books are also a love letter to cats.

Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk is a purebred show cat who evolves into a powerful magic-wielding phenomenon. If you have ever wished that your cat could speak, this book fills that desire. Matt Dinniman’s gift is that he gives Donut full personhood without making her feel unrealistic. She is vain and theatrical, but also devoted to Carl. The dynamic between Carl and Princess Donut is the emotional engine of the entire series. Their banter has made many readers laugh out loud. But the real draw is the real affection and mutual dependence that develops between them.

The relationship between Carl and Donut is a great conversation starter for parents to talk with their children about the meaning of loyalty, communication, and platonic love.

Why Should You Read the Dungeon Crawler Carl Series? Positive Values and Life Lessons

This book series is more than just dark humor and violence. The darkness is purposeful. The entire Dungeon Crawler Carlseries is a lens for examining real-world power systems. It is an allegory for exploitation, class warfare, and the spectacle of suffering. Dinniman balances this with extraordinary humor and genuine hope. Even though he has leveled up higher than anyone, Carl refuses to become what the system wants: a victim, monster, or passive contestant. Key values of these books include:

  • Loyalty
  • Caring for others
  • Building community
  • Balancing competing ethics
  • Maintaining humanity under pressure
  • Evolution towards positive masculinity
  • Evolution from selfishness to leadership
  • Prioritizing others over one’s own advancement

The fandom is large and active, which is great for community discussion. This book is ideal for a family book club with mature teens.

How Does the Audiobook Version Compare, and Is It Worth It for Busy Parents?

The audiobook versions narrated by Jeff Hays have become iconic. He brings every character to life with distinct voices and tremendous energy. His performance as Princess Donut is a fan favorite. The production quality reflects the series’s popularity. Audiobooks are ideal for commutes, exercise, and those with limited time to sit down to read.

But a warning: the humor and voice acting make it feel like prestige TV. It is very hard to pause. So budget your time if you plan to read or listen alongside a teen.
