Naturalmat USA: Safe, Natural, & Comfortable Sleep for Baby

You have read about why choosing organic bedding and mattress for your baby can be one of the most important things when it comes to your precious one’s safety. You have educated yourself on the Toxic Gas theory of SIDS and all the chemicals that go into making a conventional mattress. It’s very scary and very sad. You want change!

Now what? Where does one start in their search for better organic bedding? There are a handful of organic mattress brands on the market. Some are more or less natural than others. We’d like to introduce you to Naturalmat, our favorite maker of organic bedding and mattresses.

The Company

Naturalmat is a company founded in 2001 by Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall. The company is based in Devon, England and specializes in all-natural, organic mattresses and bedding for babies and children. Their mission is to provide the best natural sleep environment for babies. All natural fibers and materials in their products confer breathability, ventilation, and long-lasting durability. All of their mattresses are handmade!

Ingredients for a Great Product

Naturalmat is committed to using natural fibers in its products and features:

  • Organic lambswool is naturally anti-dust mite, anti-bed bug, and anti-moth. It is also naturally fire retardant.
  • Coir fiber helps promote ventilation and also contributes to the spring of the mattresses. Why is ventilation important? Because a newborn’s ability to regulate his or her body temperature is limited. Good ventilation in a mattress helps ensure that your baby does not become overheated.
  • Mohair is durable, flame resistant and is biodegradable.
  • Horse tail hair offers superior spring and resilience.
  • Organic cotton that is certified by the Soil Association.
  • Latex that is non-allergenic.

Using an organic and natural product is necessary for children prone to allergies and asthma.

Product Line-Up

Mattresses: Naturalmat has three mattresses in their collection. The Coco Mat is great for babies and children and is naturally springy and supportive. It features organic coir and organic lambswool and is touted as the most breathable mattress in the USA. The Latex Mat (latex is, in fact, natural!) is suited for newborns and older babies needing medium support. It is also breathable and uses coir and lambswool. The Mohair Mat is great for older and heavier children and is the most firm of the three mattresses. It features needled mohair as well as organic coir. Natural spring comes from the use of horse tail hair.

Mattress topper: Naturalmat offers the Top Mat as a great economical alternative for creating a more natural sleeping environment for your baby. The Top Mat is a lightweight quilted mattress which is great for use at home, to make a non-organic mattress greener, as well as for traveling. It features two layers of organic lambswool which is treated with essential oils. This offers protection against bed bugs and dust mites. The mat is machine washable.

Bedding: Organic sheets are a great way to complete your baby’s crib. Naturalmat offers organic cotton percale sheets which are perfect for summer months, as well as organic flannelette sheets for winter months. Your investment is maximized by the included quilted cover and organic mattress protector which includes soft flannelette with a waterproof layer. Both the sheets and protector are free of pesticides, insecticides, heavy metals, and chemicals. All are unbleached, un-dyed and machine washable.
