Whether you bought a brand new home or fixer-upper, when you signed up to become a homeowner, you also signed up to take care of your house whenever something breaks or leaks, needs maintenance or repair. No longer can you call the maintenance guy on staff when the door jams. It’s now your responsibility. While having a hammer, screwdriver and a wrench are absolutely necessary, at some point you’re going to need something a little more serious to get the job done. With that in mind, today we’ll discuss 8 Ryobi power tools that we think every homeowner needs. Not only will these tools keep your home in top shape, but they’ll also make completing your upcoming DIY home projects this fall that much easier.
Brushless Cordless Compact Drill and Impact Driver
If you don’t already have one (or the one you have is old, tired, and has seen way better days), a drill/driver set is a must-have for all homeowners and should be the first Ryobi power tool in your homeowner collection. You typically realize how much you need one when you try to perform drilling tasks with a screwdriver. Not only does it cut down on your work, but at just 5.3 in., Ryobi’s impact driver is 26% more compact and over 23% lighter than their brushed impact driver. Additionally, the brushless motor provides up to 1,700 in./lbs. of torque and up to 3,800 IPM to quickly drive a variety of fasteners.
Orbital Sander
Every homeowner at some point decides that they want to take on the task of refinishing furniture. Maybe the furniture your grandparents passed down to you is in good shape but needs a fresh look. Or you found a dresser on the side of the road that looks like it has potential. Either way, no one (and we really mean NO ONE) should waste their time using regular old sandpaper on these types of projects. And if that’s what you’ve been doing, then you need this next Ryobi power tool.
Ryboi’s Random Orbital Sander is so speedy that we find that it can be used on just about anything. Delivering 10,000 orbits per minute for a smooth, swirl-free finish on your work surface, this Ryobi power tool includes three pieces of sandpaper along with it’s own bag so you no longer have to worry about a ton of clean-up when you’re done sanding.
Corner Finish Sander
In addition to an orbital sander, another Ryobi power tool you will quickly want to add to your collection is Ryobi’s 18-Volt ONE+ Corner Cat Finish Sander. This sander can get into corners with ease, and it has a hook and loop sanding surface (like the orbital sander). This means that you can easily and quickly change your sandpaper; but more importantly, you don’t have to use a specific brand of sandpaper as long as it has the hook and loop. Just cut it to the size and shape you need for the job you’re working on and get to work!
Sliding Miter Saw
While we’re on the topic of home projects, once you’ve proven that you’re capable of handling a Ryobi power tool like a pro, it’s time to see what you’re really made of by creating something from scratch. Maybe your wife wants a built-in desk or you think that building a treehouse from scratch will be way cooler (and potentially cheaper) than buying a pre-built set. Either way, you’re going to need a saw.

Featuring a 1-1/4 in. dust port to help keep your work area clean and a 40-tooth Carbide-Tipped blade that provides improved performance for fast, clean cuts, as well as an LED Cutline Indicator for higher accuracy, this miter saw is a Ryobi power tool every homeowner will want if you need a nice, clean-cut.
Just as you would do while using any Ryobi power tool, be sure to wear your safety glasses (sunglasses can also be used when working outside on a sunny day), and keep your hands, clothes, and hair clear of the tool while using it. Also, make sure to avoid any clutter around your workspace that might cause an accident.
Air Cannon
Most home projects tend to occur during warmer months. As such, while this next Ryobi power tool isn’t technically a “power tool,” we can’t imagine life without Ryobi’s 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid 18 inch Air Cannon Drum Fan. Even on a cool fall day, when you’re working around the house, you work up a sweat. It’s not always possible to plug in a fan to cool off. Luckily, you’ll never run out of power with the convenient option of using a ONE+ Battery to run the fan or switching over to electric power with the included extension cord for extended use. The air drum design and hybrid technology allow for easy portability and is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Even the kids love it!
Hybrid Stereo with Bluetooth Technology

This is absolutely still one of our favorite Ryobi products along side the air cannon. Like all of the Ryobi power tools we’ve discussed today, these items are part of the RYOBI ONE+ System of over 175 Cordless Tools that all work on the same battery platform so as long as you have Ryobi ONE+ batteries, you can power all your Ryobi power tools using the same set of batteries, but the hybrid stereo lets you jam out while you work.
Inflator/Deflator
Another Ryobi power tool every homeowner should own is an inflator/deflator. This inflator is capable of completing both high pressure and high volume applications. Powered by RYOBI 18-Volt batteries, this unit has maximum portability for any location and includes a high-pressure hose, high-pressure nozzle, Presta valve adaptor, sports ball needle, high volume hose, and pinch valve nozzle.
One obvious use is to refill the air in your tires, but we find that this Ryobi power tool is awesome for inflating and deflating the countless number of inflatable tools that our kids have. If you managed to get through the summer without one of these tools, do we need to remind you that Christmas will be here before you know it? We’ve had at least one inflatable toy (given at either Christmas or birthdays) every year since our kids were born. Most recently, we found ourselves blowing up a giant unicorn. This inflator/deflator will save you countless hours of blowing up toys with your mouth.
More Batteries!
Finally, if you plan to invest in the Ryobi ONE+ system, go ahead get yourself extra batteries. While many of the products we’ve discussed today come with a battery pack, we find that you just can’t have enough batteries. No one’s workflow should be interrupted due to a dead battery. Always keep a back-up battery charged in case you need to make a quick-change in the middle of a project.
