How to Have a Successful Movie Date Night at Home

Movie date night at home is perfect not only for new parents, but for those on a budget, or anyone who is looking for a date night but would rather stay home in their PJs.  You can go as big or as small as you want to when creating your at-home movie date night.  From homemade popcorn to the best movie theater snacks and setting the scene for the best movie date night at the home, it is all laid out for you!

How to Set the Scene For Your Movie Date Night at Home

How To Have A Successful Movie Date Night At Home

Before you even start to set up for your movie date night, pick the movie!  You have been there before, sitting down after a long day to watch a movie, and spending an hour just trying to decide on the perfect movie to watch to only be disappointed or waste too much time that you just end up watching reruns over your favorite show.  Decide ahead of time so there are no debates leading up to the movie!

When you sit down to watch a movie at home, it is definitely not the same as a movie theater setting.  Sure, you probably would rather be at home than at the movie theater, but there is something about movie theaters that really bring it to the big screen.  The oversized chairs, the smell of buttery popcorn, the huge screen with a booming sound system, and the taste of your favorite treats. All of that plays into setting the scene for the perfect at-home movie date night. It is all about the ambiance, stimulating your five senses, and creating the right setting for your movie date night.

First set up your viewing area to mimic a theater setting (as much it is possible).  Set up your seats, you might have to rearrange your furniture, to have two seats directly in front of the screen.  Make sure you have a place for snacks and beverages and all the cozy elements you may need and want such as throw blankets.  You probably don’t have black-out curtains in your living room, but if you are watching a movie during the day you will want to put a dark blanket or sheet over your windows to block out the extra light that could cause a glare on your tv.

By rearranging your space, it will feel a bit different and special since it is something new, adding to the movie date night. Try to make the room as dark as possible by reducing outside light coming in and eliminating the extra light inside as well.  If you are watching a movie at night, put on a fire in the winter or some candles for the extra romantic ambiance.  For your movie date night at home, turn off your cell phones and have everything ready to go before you start the movie.  Plan out your food and beverage ahead of time so you are not having to think about what you want and stop the movie to make something.

You can go in various directions with your movie date night food and beverage choice, there really is no wrong choice!   Traditional-think popcorn, candy in a box, nachos, and hot dogs.  With this idea it is easy to get your favorite candy at the store, some pre-popped popcorn, and throw in a tray of nachos to enjoy for your movie date night  This is a great idea because you can essentially have “courses” during the movie and it is an easy prep with virtually no clean up afterward as it can all be done ahead of time.

Upscale-charcuterie board, again easy to make, set up, and enjoy during your movie date night.  You can make it as hearty as you want if you are enjoying the charcuterie board in place of dinner.  Add some gourmet chocolates, truffle popcorn, or even some pigs in a blanket to go with the movie theme.  Pair your beverages accordingly and have everything chilled and ready by the time you start the movie.

If you just want to skip straight to dessert, set up an ice cream sundae bar, complete with all of the toppings. Special Touches Needed for Movie Date Night at Home

How To Have A Successful Movie Date Night At Home

You can easily just buy everything ready to eat, but it adds a bit to the experience if you make homemade popcorn for your movie date night. It doesn’t take that long and the freshly popped popcorn drizzled with melted butter is way better than any pre-popped or microwave popcorn you can find.

If you don’t have appropriate serving wear pick up a few inexpensive pieces for your movie date night. You can just get a couple of popcorn cups to add to the ambiance of the movie date night at home. Even if you don’t have the full setup to create a theater-like experience, you can easily create a cozy movie date night with what you have. Throw a bunch of pillows, blankets on the floor and cozy up with a laptop and your love.

Also, tidy up as you are setting up, nothing is more of a buzz kill than having to do a full clean-up job after relaxing.  Plus you don’t want to be enjoying your movie date night and looking at a pile of toys on the ground or pass by the kitchen sink on your way to get dessert and see it full of dishes.  Have everything cleaned up and put away so that when the movie finishes you can just enjoy the one-on-one time with your love rather than cleaning everything up before bed.
