Poison-Proofing Your Home: Identifying Common Household Poisons

Statistics show that over 300 children in the United States are treated everyday in an emergency department from being poisoned. The CDC reports that at least two children die daily as a result of exposure to poisons. These numbers are dramatic, so it is necessary to check your home and property for potential hazards.

There are many items in every room of your home that can be poisonous, especially to children. Many of us use these common household items multiple times a day and do not think twice about their hazardous effects; however, it is important to recognize that these products are toxic and can result in serious injury or death.

Collagen and Gelatin: Why You Need Them

Collagen is the protein that forms connective fibers in tissues such as skin, ligaments, cartilage, bones and teeth. Collagen also acts as a kind of intracellular “glue” that gives support, shape and bulk to blood vessels, bones, and organs such as the heart, kidneys and liver. Collagen fibers keep bones and blood vessels strong, and help to anchor our teeth to our gums. The repair of blood vessels, bruises, and broken bones require the use of collagen. As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen accounts for more mass than all the other proteins put together. But, is collagen something that we should be concerned with having to replenish on a daily basis? Read on to learn why it’s important, and how you can have a leg-up to a little known health crisis that is becoming more common, every day.

Vial of L.I.F.E. (Lifesaving Information for Emergencies)

Have you ever thought about what your child would do in an emergency situation where you or the adult they were with became unconscious or unresponsive? Would they know how to call 9-1-1? Would they know what to tell the 9-1-1 operator? Would they be able to tell emergency responders the medical information that is needed to save your life? How to Use an AED

“CLEAR!” “SHOCKING!” If you watch any of those hospital drama television shows, you’ve heard these words yelled many times. These words are associated with the use of an AED, or Automatic External Defibrillator. An AED is a lifesaving device used when an individual experiences sudden cardiac arrest. You’ve seen it in movies and on TV; the doctors or nurses take those hand-held paddles and rub them together before touching them to the chest of a person who is not conscious and not breathing. You then see a violent jolt of the person’s body. This is the device delivering an electric shock to help a person’s heart return to a normal rhythm. Using an AED is currently the only way to restore a regular heart rhythm to a person in cardiac arrest.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher is one of the most important tools you could have in your home to save life and property in the event of a fire. A fire extinguisher can be used to put out small fires or hold back flames until you are able to escape the area of the fire. A fire extinguisher should not be used on large, uncontrollable fires. The Fire Department should always be notified of a fire, even if you are able to successfully extinguish the fire on your own. A fire can reignite or extend into the walls where you can’t see it. Firefighters will be able to ensure the fire is properly extinguished, as well as check for extension to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas of the house.

No matter what stage of life you are currently in, there are lots of things that can affect your sleep. While you can’t do much about a baby waking you up or fretting over a 17 year old, if snoring (by either you or your partner) is disrupting your night, you can deal with that problem. Several of us here at Daily Mom have dealt with snoring messing with our sleep, and we know how frustrating it can be.

What is a fitness retreat?

Fitness retreats have been becoming more popular lately but you may still have not heard of the concept. If you are a self-proclaimed #fitmom, trying to find time when you can workout is seemingly more difficult in the summer than it is during the school year. Even though you don’t have the busy-ness of the regular school year, summer time seems to be more busy instead of less busy. Swim lessons, pool time, vacations, summer activities, summer camp shuffling, and never-ending playdates can make getting your workout in difficult.
